Don't Throw Away the Handout: Efficacy of Patient Education in Pediatric Orthopaedic Trauma.

Background: Printed educational materials (PEMs) have been used for patient education in various settings. The purpose of this study was to determine the readability, understandability, and actionability of trauma-related educational material from the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA, Orthokids), as well as determine its efficacy in educating pediatric orthopaedic trauma patients and caregivers.

Methods: The readability, understandability and actionability of PEMs was assessed using the Patient Education materials Assessment Tool (PEMAT).

Pediatric Orthopaedic Observerships in North America for International Surgeons: A Qualitative Study Exploring Motivations, Relevance, and Alternate Learning Platforms.

Background: Given the growing interest among international surgeons to participate in North American clinical observerships, it is essential to incorporate international surgeons' views to further enhance the program's applicability, value, and accessibility. In this qualitative follow-up study, we explored the motivations, relevance, and opinions about alternate learning platforms among the international surgeons who had participated in a pediatric orthopaedic clinical observership in North America.

Methods: Using a semistructured interview guide, international surgeons who had participated in a North American pediatric orthopaedic observership during 2009 to 2019 were interviewed until data saturation and inductive thematic saturation were reached.

Radiographic and perioperative outcomes following anterior thoracic vertebral body tethering and posterior lumbar spine tethering: a pilot series.

Background And Context:  In patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) of main thoracic and lumbar spine regions, combined anterior thoracic vertebral body tethering and posterior lumbar spine tethering (ATVBT/PLST) is a novel non-fusion treatment option for growth modulation and conservation of motion.

Methods:  Fourteen patients with AIS who underwent ATVBT/PLST with at least 2-year follow-up were included. Primary outcomes included quality of life as assessed by SRS-22 instruments, radiographic analysis, and revision operations.

Multi-Level Influences of Smoke-Free Policies in Subsidized Housing: Applying the COM-B Model and Neighborhood Assessments to Inform Smoke-Free Policies.

Smoke-free policies in multi-unit housing are associated with reduced exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS); however, attitudes toward comprehensive smoke-free policies among residents in subsidized multi-unit housing are unknown. In this mixed-methods study, we explored the socio-ecological context for tobacco and cannabis use and attitudes toward policies restricting indoor use of these products through interviews with residents ( = 134) and staff ( = 22) in 15 federally subsidized multi-unit housing in San Francisco, California. We conducted a geo-spatial and ethnographic environmental assessment by mapping alcohol, cannabis, and tobacco retail density using ArcGIS, and conducted systematic social observations of the neighborhood around each site for environmental cues to tobacco use.

Orthopaedic trauma observerships in North America for international surgeons: the visitors' perspective.

Unlabelled: International observerships are one of many efforts aimed at addressing disparities in orthopaedic trauma care globally. However, their impact on visiting surgeons and their home countries, as well as the challenges faced by participating surgeons, are not well-documented.

Methods: A survey was distributed to overseas surgeons who participated in an orthopaedic trauma observership from 2009 to 2020.

Perioperative Outcomes of Open Anterior Vertebral Body Tethering and Instrumented Posterior Spinal Fusion for Skeletally Immature Patients With Idiopathic Scoliosis.

Background: Correcting adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) without fusion can be achieved with anterior vertebral body tethering (AVBT). However, little is known about the perioperative outcomes, pain control, and clinical outcomes in patients undergoing AVBT compared with instrumented posterior spinal fusion (IPSF).

Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we compared pediatric patients with AIS who underwent either AVBT or IPSF.

Effect of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on fracture healing in children: A systematic review.

Background: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the most commonly prescribed medications in the United States. Although they are safe and effective means of analgesia for children with broken bones, there is considerable variation in their clinical use due to persistent concerns about their potentially adverse effect on fracture healing.

Aim: To assess whether NSAID exposure is a risk factor for fracture nonunion in children.

Background: The national rates of readmission and reoperation after open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) of midshaft clavicle fractures in adolescents is unknown.

Aim: To determine rates of and risk factors for readmission and reoperation after ORIF of midshaft clavicle fractures in adolescents.

Methods: This retrospective study utilized data from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project State Inpatient Database for California and Florida and included 11728 patients 10-18 years of age that underwent ORIF of midshaft clavicle fracture between 2005 and 2012.

Promoting Colorectal Cancer Screening in South Asian Muslims Living in the USA.

Colorectal cancer is one of the more common forms of cancer in South Asian men and women. Despite the rates of colorectal cancer (CRC) in South Asians, the CRC screening rates remain low in South Asians and Muslims compared with those in Whites and other ethnic minorities in the USA. Religious and cultural barriers have been examined in relation to other types of cancer such as breast and cervical cancers.

Preliminary Evaluation of Educational Outreach to Promote Colorectal Cancer Screening Among South Asians in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Culturally-tailored interventions increase rates of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening in diverse populations. South Asian Americans have very low rates of CRC screening. Targeted interventions may improve community awareness and likelihood of undergoing screening.
