Vegan Nutrition for Mothers and Children: Practical Tools for Healthcare Providers.

As the number of subjects choosing vegan diets increases, healthcare providers must be prepared to give the best advice to vegan patients during all stages of life. A completely plant-based diet is suitable during pregnancy, lactation, infancy, and childhood, provided that it is well-planned. Balanced vegan diets meet energy requirements on a wide variety of plant foods and pay attention to some nutrients that may be critical, such as protein, fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, iron, zinc, iodine, calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin B12.

A multi-element psychosocial intervention for early psychosis (GET UP PIANO TRIAL) conducted in a catchment area of 10 million inhabitants: study protocol for a pragmatic cluster randomized controlled trial.

Background: Multi-element interventions for first-episode psychosis (FEP) are promising, but have mostly been conducted in non-epidemiologically representative samples, thereby raising the risk of underestimating the complexities involved in treating FEP in 'real-world' services.

Methods/design: The Psychosis early Intervention and Assessment of Needs and Outcome (PIANO) trial is part of a larger research program (Genetics, Endophenotypes and Treatment: Understanding early Psychosis - GET UP) which aims to compare, at 9 months, the effectiveness of a multi-component psychosocial intervention versus treatment as usual (TAU) in a large epidemiologically based cohort of patients with FEP and their family members recruited from all public community mental health centers (CMHCs) located in two entire regions of Italy (Veneto and Emilia Romagna), and in the cities of Florence, Milan and Bolzano. The GET UP PIANO trial has a pragmatic cluster randomized controlled design.

High human herpesvirus 8 seroprevalence in populations from Western Balkan countries.

Patterns of endemicity of human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8) are still undefined in some European populations, such as those from Western Balkan countries. Serum samples from 605 human immunodeficiency virus-seronegative subjects (299 Albanians and 306 Kosovars) were tested for the presence of HHV8 antibodies to a capsid-related open reading frame (ORF65)-encoded protein and a latency-associated nuclear antigen (LANA) to determine HHV8 seroprevalence in populations from Albania and from the Kosovo region of former Yugoslavia. Levels of co- circulation with hepatitis A (HAV) and hepatitis B (HBV) viruses were also determined.

High seroprevalence of human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) in HIV-1-infected pregnant women of Southeastern Italy: association with injection drug use and hepatitis C virus infection.

The seroprevalence of human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) in a group of HIV-1-infected pregnant women and in mother-child pairs from Southeastern Italy (Apulia) was determined. Blood was collected from 49 HIV-1-infected women during pregnancy or at delivery as well as from their children. Samples were analysed for the presence of antibodies to the latency-associated nuclear antigen and a structural antigen encoded by open reading frame 65.

Distinct role of fibroblast growth factor-2 and vascular endothelial growth factor on tumor growth and angiogenesis.

Tumors express more than a single angiogenic growth factor. To investigate the relative impact of fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) on tumor growth and neovascularization, we generated tumor cell transfectants differing for VEGF and/or FGF-2 expression. Human endometrial adenocarcinoma HEC-1-B-derived Tet-FGF-2 cells that express FGF-2 under the control of the tetracycline-responsive promoter (Tet-off system) were further transfected with a VEGF(121) anti-sense (AS-VEGF) cDNA.

Modulation of tumor angiogenesis by conditional expression of fibroblast growth factor-2 affects early but not established tumors.

Fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF2) is a pleiotropic heparin-binding growth factor endowed with a potent angiogenic activity in vitro and in vivo. To investigate the impact of the modulation of FGF2 expression on the neovascularization at different stages of tumor growth, we generated stable transfectants (Tet-FGF2) from the human endometrial adenocarcinoma HEC-1-B cell line in which FGF2 expression is under the control of the tetracycline-responsive promoter (Tet-off system). After transfection, independent clones were obtained in which FGF2 mRNA and protein were up-regulated compared with parental cells.

Endothelial cells overexpressing basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2) induce vascular tumors in immunodeficient mice.

Basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2) is expressed in vascular endothelium during tumor neovascularization and angioproliferative diseases, including vascular tumors and Kaposi's sarcoma (KS). We have investigated the in vivo biological consequences of endothelial cell activation by endogenous FGF-2 in a mouse aortic endothelial cell line transfected with a retroviral expression vector harboring a human FGF-2 cDNA and the neomycin resistance gene. FGF-2 transfectants, named pZipbFGF2-MAE cells, caused the rapid growth of highly vascularized, non-infiltrating tumors when injected in nude mice.

Up-regulation of urokinase-type plasminogen activator in squamous cell carcinoma of human larynx.

The expression of urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) was investigated in squamous cell carcinoma of the human larynx. For this purpose, tissue extracts from 25 matched samples of normal mucosa and neoplastic larynx were compared for the levels of uPA activity as evaluated by a chromogenic PA assay and sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) zymography. Also, uPA antigen was quantified by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in 19 cases.
