Introduction: AS is a chronic disease with an inflammatory serum microenvironment characterized by increased oxidative stress (OS). Along with OS, reactive oxygen species (ROS) are elevated in patients with AS. Overexpression of ROS causes active inflammatory processes leading to the secretion of pro-inflammatory factors, including tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α).

Important Predictive Factors for the Prognosis of Patients With Peritoneal Metastasis of Gastric Cancer.

Background: This study investigated predictive factors for patients with peritoneal metastases of gastric cancer (PMGC) who underwent conversion cytoreductive surgery (C-CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal intraoperative chemotherapy (HIPEC) after responding to induction chemotherapy (laparoscopic HIPEC [LHIPEC]) followed by concomitant systemic and intraperitoneal chemotherapy (bidirectional intraperitoneal and systemic chemotherapy [BIC]).

Methods: Diagnostic laparoscopy was performed for 62 patients with PMGC between January 2017 and December 2022. The patients underwent LHIPEC and BIC induction chemotherapy using intraperitoneal docetaxel (30 mg/m) and cisplatin (30 mg/m), and intravenous chemotherapy for three cycles.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to re-define the anatomical structures which are important for blocking the sciatic nerve and the nerves within the adductor canal which innervate the knee joint through the same injection site. Three series of biarylpyrazole imidazole and triazoles are described, which vary in the linker between the biaryl pyrazole and imidazole/triazole group. The imidazole and triazole series with the short -CH- linker displayed promising antimycobacterial activity, with the imidazole-CH- series (7) showing low MIC values (6.25-25 μg/mL), which was also influenced by lipophilicity.

Quality of life after thyroid surgery.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to inquire how patients' quality of life is affected after thyroid surgery and the factors involved.

Methods: A semi-structured questionnaire and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale (WHOQOL-BREF) were applied to 101 patients prior to surgery. Thereafter data was collected in the early and again in the late post-operative period.

Evolution of management in peritoneal surface malignancies.

Management of peritoneal surface malignancies has gradually evolved by the introduction of cytoreductive surgery in combination with intraperitoneal chemotherapy applications. Recently, peritoneal metastases of intraabdominal solid organ tumors and primary peritoneal malignancies such as peritoneal mesothelioma are being treated with this new approach. Selection criteria are important to reduce morbidity and mortality rates of patients who will experience minimal or no benefit from these combined treatment modalities.

Study of water adsorption and capillary bridge formation for SiO(2) nanoparticle layers by means of a combined in situ FT-IR reflection spectroscopy and QCM-D set-up.

Water adsorption and capillary bridge formation within a layer of SiO2-nanoparticles were studied in situ by means of a combination of quartz crystal microbalance (QCM-D) with dissipation analysis and Fourier transformation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (FT-IRRAS). FT-IR data were employed to distinguish the "ice-like" and "liquid-like" contributions and to support the analysis of the QCM-D data concerning mass change and dissipation. Combined measurements show that for SiO2-nanoparticles with a diameter of about 250 nm, the formation of two adsorbed monolayers of water as well as bulk water leads to a rather linear increase in the dissipation for relative humidity values of up to 60% which is followed by a strong increase in dissipation during the actual liquid bridge formation.

Bioavailability of trace elements in beans and zinc-biofortified wheat in pigs.

The objectives of this experiment were to study bioavailability of trace elements in beans and wheat containing different levels of zinc and to study how the water solubility of trace elements was related to the bioavailability in pigs. Three wheat and two bean types were used: wheat of Danish origin as a control (CtrlW), two Turkish wheat types low (LZnW) and high (HZnW) in zinc, a common bean (Com), and a faba bean (Faba). Two diets were composed by combining 81 % CtrlW and 19 % Com or Faba beans.

Atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based nanografting for the study of self-assembled monolayer formation of organophosphonic acids on Al2O3 single-crystal surfaces.

Adsorption, stability, and organization kinetics of organophosphonic acids on single-crystalline alumina surfaces were investigated by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based imaging, nanoshaving, and nanografting. AFM friction and phase imaging have shown that chemical etching and subsequent annealing led to heterogeneities on single-crystalline surfaces with (0001) orientation. Self-assembly and stability of octadecylphosphonic acid (ODPA) were shown to be strictly dependent upon the observed heterogeneities of the surface termination, where it was locally shown that ODPA can loosely or strongly bind on different terminations of the crystal surface.

Objective: We developed equations to predict %BF from anthropometric measurements in rural and urban Guatemalan adults.

Design: Body density was measured in 123 women and 114 men by using hydrostatic weighing and simultaneous measurement of residual lung volume.

Energy requirements of children and adolescents.

Total energy expenditure (TEE) was calculated at 1-18 years of age from measurements with doubly labelled water (DLW) in 483 boys and 646 girls, and heart rate monitoring (HRM) in 318 boys and 162 girls. Studies on obese, underweight and stunted groups were not included. TEE of populations with different lifestyles was estimated by factorial calculations in 42 studies on time allocation involving 1982 boys and 1969 girls in developed industrialised countries, and 1236 boys and 1116 girls in developing countries.

Validation of a semi-quantitative food-frequency questionnaire for use among adults in Guatemala.

Objective: The purpose of the study was to assess the validity of a 52-item semi-quantitative food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) by comparing it with multiple 24-hour dietary recalls.

Design: Three non-consecutive 24-hour dietary recalls and one FFQ were administered over a one-month period.
