This protocol details methods for a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effects of ED on university students' mental health and academic performance.

Effect of non-surgical treatment in diabetes-associated periodontitis on immune/inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers: A pilot study.

Aims: To investigate the effects of non-surgical periodontal treatment on the levels of cytokines, sIgA, antimicrobial peptides, oxidative and antioxidative agents in comparison between patients with and without diabetes.

Methods: A case-control study that included patients (n = 45) with periodontitis who have or do not have diabetes. Cytokine concentrations in crevicular gingival fluid (GCF) and saliva were determined using LUMINEX and ELISA assays, respectively.

Acute Slice Patch-Clamp Recordings to Characterize Neural Populations in the Hippocampal Subgranular Zone.

With this technique, it is possible to characterize the neuron maturation level and its integration into the hippocampal circuit. Exploring stress and morphology in two songbird species across urban, agricultural, and natural habitats on San Cristobal Island, Galapagos.

Land use changes can have morphological and physiological impacts on wildlife. This study aimed to explore the influence of anthropogenic land use on the morphology and corticosterone concentrations in two songbirds endemic to the Galapagos archipelago: the granivorous Small Ground Finch Geospiza fuliginosa and the insectivorous Galapagos Yellow Warbler Setophaga petechia aureola in San Cristobal Island. Birds were caught and measured between June and August 2018 and June and July 2019 across four areas with different human land uses: urban green areas in the coastal town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, natural deciduous forest in the lowlands, agricultural areas in the highlands, and seasonal evergreen forest in the highlands.

Building a hereditary cancer program in Colombia: analysis of germline pathogenic and likely pathogenic variants spectrum in a high-risk cohort.

Genetic studies in Latin America have expanded, but further efforts are needed to understand cancer susceptibility genes beyond BRCA1 and BRCA2, especially by characterizing the prevalence and spectrum of pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants (PVs) in the region. This study aimed to determine the frequency of hereditary cancer syndromes (HCS) in Colombians with solid tumors and to characterize the spectrum of PVs. Using data from the Colombia's largest Institutional Hereditary Cancer Program, we included patients aged ≥18 years with solid tumors who met HCS criteria and were offered genetic testing with a 105-cancer gene panel.

Undergraduate research programs focused on health disparities can deeply impact students' self-efficacy, interest, and persistence in health and research-focused careers. In this study, we designed, implemented, and evaluated a novel summer undergraduate research program focused on maternal, child, and family health.

Introduction: To determine for the first time the incidence of preeclampsia and other pregnancy complications according to the mode of endometrial preparation for frozen embryo transfer (FET) in a randomized fashion.

Methods: Women about to undergo FET of a single euploid blastocyst were randomly assigned to a modified natural cycle (MNC) or an artificial cycle (AC). Inclusion criteria were as follows: Caucasian; non-obese; 18-43 years of age; nulliparity; regular menstrual cycles; and autologous oocytes.

Background: While arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is the ideal initial option for hemodialysis access, failure can occur due to early thrombosis or lack of maturation. Exploring trade-offs in drug administration for cancer treatment: A multi-criteria optimisation approach.

This study addresses the combination of immunotherapy and chemotherapy in cancer treatment, recognising its promising effectiveness but highlighting the challenges of complex interactions between these therapeutic modalities. The central objective is to determine guidelines for the optimal administration of drugs, using an optimal control model that considers interactions in tumour dynamics, including cancer cells, the immune system, and therapeutic agents. The optimal control model is transformed into a multi-objective optimisation problem with treatment constraints.

The gut microbiota has emerged as a critical player in metabolic and liver health, with its influence extending to the pathogenesis and progression of steatotic liver diseases. This review delves into the gut-liver axis, a dynamic communication network linking the gut microbiome and liver through metabolic, immunological, and inflammatory pathways. Dysbiosis, characterized by altered microbial composition, contributes significantly to the development of hepatic steatosis, inflammation, and fibrosis via mechanisms such as gut barrier dysfunction, microbial metabolite production, and systemic inflammation.

Relative Quantitation of EFNA1 Expression in Mouse Heart Tissue Histologic Sections Using MALDI-MSI.

EFNA1 (ephrinA1), a highly expressed tyrosine kinase receptor-ligand in healthy cardiomyocytes, is reduced following myocardial infarction (MI). A single intramyocardial injection of chimeric EFNA1-Fc at the time of ischemia mitigates the injury in both reperfused and non-reperfused mouse myocardium by reducing apoptosis, necrosis, and inflammation. Recently, we have successfully imaged and qualitatively identified endogenous EFNA1 pre- and post-MI using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI) coupled with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MALDI/TOF MS).

Cross-neutralizing activity of the chikungunya vaccine VLA1553 against three prevalent chikungunya lineages.

Cross-neutralization is generally a prerequisite for cross-protection of vaccines against diseases caused by heterologous viruses. Using sera obtained from a randomized clinical phase 3 trial in adults, we investigated the cross-neutralization activity of VLA1553, a vaccine recently approved to prevent chikungunya disease. Analysed in a plaque reduction neutralization test, the three major chikungunya virus (CHIKV) lineages, namely the East Central South African, the West African, and the Asian lineage, were inhibited by CHIKV-specific neutralizing antibodies present in the sera from vaccinated humans.
