Diabetic macular edema (DME) is the main cause of visual loss associated with diabetes but any association between DME and cardiovascular events is unclear. This study aims to describe the possible association between DME and cardiovascular events in a multicenter cross-sectional study of patients with type 2 diabetes. Two thousand eight hundred seven patients with type 2 diabetes were recruited from diabetes and nephrology clinical institutional centers participating in the DIAB 2 NEPHROGENE study focusing on diabetic complications.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of ARMC5 mutations and analyze genotype-phenotype correlation in a large cohort of unrelated PBMAH patients with subclinical or clinical CS.
Background: Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and kidney damage (abnormal urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio [uACR] or estimated glomerular filtration rate [eGFR]) are predictive of major cardiovascular events (MACE) in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) but are rarely used in cardiovascular score calculators. Our study aimed to assess their respective prognostic values for MACE and the additive information they provide to score calculators.
Methods: A total of 1298 T2D (43% women) aged 65 (SD 11) years were followed up for a median of 65 months, with MACE as a primary composite end point: cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or stroke.
Objective: Epidemiological studies and randomized clinical trials have demonstrated in various populations that resting heart rate (RHR) was an independent predictor of cardiovascular (CV) risk and all-cause mortality. However, few data specifically evaluated the relationship between RHR and long-term CV and renal complications in a large population of type 2 diabetic (T2D) patients.
Research Design And Methods: We performed a single-center, prospective analysis in 1,088 T2D patients.
Current recommendations regarding glycemic control suggest that HbA(1c) should be lower than 6.5%. This is supported by data regarding microvascular disease, namely retinopathy rather than nephropathy.

Background: Adult growth hormone (GH) deficiency must be diagnosed before prescribing therapeutic recombinant human GH. We studied the clinical relevance of a diagnostic strategy for growth hormone deficiency (GHD) using IGF-1 determination as a first step.
Methods: In 2000 and 2001, we tested 142 adult patients with hypothalamo-pituitary disorders for somatotropic function using Insulin Tolerance Test (ITT), the reference test for the diagnosis of GHD, with concomitant Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) determination, a marker of somatotropic function.
Aims: Insulin resistance is a key feature of type 2 diabetes. It is also involved in the development and progression of microvascular complications. We analysed the relationship between parental history of diabetes, insulin resistance and diabetic nephropathy (DN) and assessed the specific maternal and paternal influences of history of type 2 diabetes on DN in type 1 diabetic offspring.

Methods: Type 2 diabetic patients consecutively admitted for initiation of insulin therapy were studied between January and March 2004 in a monocenter study. Dietary intake was assessed by a 7-day food history before insulin treatment (initial visit) and 4 to 6 months later (final visit).
Objective: Silent myocardial ischemia (SMI) in asymptomatic subjects with no history of myocardial infarction or angina is a frequent condition in diabetic patients. The aim of the study was to examine the predictive value of SMI for cardiac events in a multicenter cohort and to determine whether this value is higher in patients with a particular clinical profile.
Research Design And Methods: A total of 370 asymptomatic diabetic patients with at least two additional cardiovascular risk factors was recruited in four departments of diabetology.
Background: Recent studies suggest that HbA1c is an important predictor of the glycometabolic state of patients admitted for acute myocardial infarction (AMI).
Objective: We aimed at comparing the results of HbA1c concentrations obtained by 2 different methods in patients with AMI.
Research Design And Methods: In a first study, HbA1c was measured in all patients consecutively hospitalized for AMI, during a 6 month period using the HPLC method and the DCA 2000 device in the biochemistry laboratory.
Surgery for recurrent nodular goiter is associated with a significant risk of parathyroid and recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) morbidity. Total thyroidectomy for benign disease is assessed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk factors for recurrence and the morbidity associated with reoperation.

We aimed to determine the contribution of admission plasma glucose and HbA(1c) on post-acute myocardial infarction prognosis.
Patients And Methods: Admission plasma glucose and HbA(1c) were simultaneously measured in all patients consecutively hospitalized for acute myocardial infarction.

A 45-year-old man presented with headaches and extraocular muscle palsy due to a sellar mass extending into the right cavernous sinus. Hormonal determinations revealed a gonadotrophic insufficiency. A transsphenoidal surgical removal revealed a lymphocytic hypophysitis with fibrosis and necrosis.

Urinary kallikrein activity has been reported to be partly inherited and to be reduced in essential hypertension. In a systematic search for molecular variants of the human kallikrein gene, nine single-nucleotide polymorphisms were identified.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is the main cause of increase in patients suffering from end-stage renal failure in France. We performed an observational study of the change in renal function of type 2 diabetic patients, attending our diabetology clinic. Clinical and biological data were regularly entered in an informatic database (Pénélope, Poitiers University Hospital).

Methods: Forty-nine diabetics and 63 consecutive nondiabetics underwent dobutamine stress echocardiography between April and December 1999, to check for new regional wall-motion abnormalities.
We report the case of a 52-year-old woman with long-term type 1 diabetes mellitus, complicated with proliferative retinopathy, autonomic neuropathy and microalbuminuria and moderate renal failure. A normochromic, normocytic are generative anaemia had been diagnosed for three years. Clinical and biological investigations for the aetiology of anaemia remained normal or negative.

We studied 72 diabetic patients, aged 41 to 65 years, recruited consecutively at the Poitiers diabetes clinic. All patients had at least one cardiovascular risk factor associated with diabetes mellitus (type 1 diabetes duration > or =15 years, dyslipidaemia, smoking, hypertension, micro/macro-albuminuria).
