Chronic non-healing wounds are characterized by persistent inflammation, excessive matrix-degrading proteolytic activity and compromised extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis. Previous studies showed that S100A8/A9 are strongly dysregulated in delayed wound healing and impair the proper function of immune cells. The present study has focused on the mainstream integration of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) production with industrial wastewater treatment by exploiting three different technologies all operating in sequencing batch reactors (SBR): conventional activated sludge (AS-SBR), membrane bioreactor (AS-MBR) and aerobic granular sludge (AGS). A full aerobic feast/famine strategy was adopted to obtain enrichment of biomass with PHA-storing bacteria. The present study investigated the combined production of reclaimed water for reuse purposes and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) from an agro-food industrial wastewater. A pilot plant implementing a two-stage process for PHA production was studied. It consisted of a mainstream sequencing batch membrane bioreactor (SBMBR) in which selection of PHA-accumulating organisms and wastewater treatment were carried out in, and a side-stream fed-batch reactor (FBR) where the excess sludge from the SBMBR was used for PHA accumulation.

The aim of this FEPSAC Position Statement is to summarize current knowledge about athletes' dual careers (DCs) in the European context and propose recommendations for future DC research, practice, and policy. Inspired by the European Union's Guidelines on Dual Careers of Athletes (European Commission, 2012), researchers, practitioners, and policy makers collaborated over the last decade to create the European DC discourse as a context-informed and negotiated body of DC knowledge. In this paper, we proceed from analyzing this body of knowledge using recent review papers and European DC psychological research projects to formulating seven postulates summarizing DC research findings on factors influencing athletes in their striving for DC excellence.

Intermittent access (IntA) models of cocaine self-administration were developed to better model in rodents how cocaine is used by human drug users. Compared to traditional continuous access (ContA) models, IntA has been shown to enhance several pharmacological and behavioral effects of cocaine, but few studies have examined sex differences in IntA. Moreover, no one has examined the efficacy of cue extinction to reduce cocaine seeking in the IntA model, which has previously shown to be ineffective in other models that promote habit-like cocaine seeking.

Persistent glucocorticoid elevation consistent with chronic stress exposure can lead to psychopathology, including mood and anxiety disorders. Women and stress-exposed adolescents are more likely to be diagnosed with mood disorders, suggesting that sex and age are important factors in determining vulnerability, though much remains to be determined regarding the mechanisms underlying this risk. Thus, the aim of the present experiments was to use the chronic corticosterone (CORT) exposure paradigm, a model of depression-like behavior that has previously been established primarily in adult males, to determine the mood-related effects of CORT in female and adolescent rats.
