Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is usually mild and self-limited in children. However, a few Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2) infections in children may progress to severe disease with respiratory distress or can result in a multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) associated with COVID-19. The immune mechanisms for these differential clinical outcomes are largely unknown.

The treatment of small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a challenge for all specialists involved. New treatments have been added to the therapeutic armamentarium in recent months, but efforts must continue to improve both survival and quality of life. Advances in surgery and radiotherapy have resulted in prolonged survival times and fewer complications, while more careful patient selection has led to increased staging accuracy.

Purpose: To report the findings of unilateral cystoid macular edema (CME) associated with bilateral sub-foveal hyperreflectivity in a patient previously diagnosed with breast cancer and treated with docetaxel and cyclophosphamide.

Observations: A 69-year-old female on docetaxel and cyclophosphamide chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer developed blurry vision 20 days after initiation of therapy. Ophthalmic examination revealed reduced visual acuity with bilateral retinal pigment epithelium mottling and annular sub-foveal thickening in the left eye.

The increase in life expectancy with the advent of highly effective antiretroviral therapy poses challenges in terms of toxicity and drug interactions. Exogenous Cushing syndrome by interaction between ritonavir and inhaled fluticasone in children diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus infection and chronic pulmonary pathology is rare. So far, there are 20 cases reported.

We report the case of a 9-year-old girl with chiasmal glioma and longstanding monocular nystagmus, in whom video-oculography showed a disconjugate binocular nystagmus indistinguishable from spasmus nutans. The "acquired monocular nystagmus" associated with chiasmal glioma is actually a binocular nystagmus that is indistinguishable from spasmus nutans, except that it lacks the associated head nodding and torticollis. Superimposed visual loss in one eye predisposes to acquired monocular nystagmus and explains the absence of the other components of the spasmus nutans triad.

Purpose: To evaluate the effects of isolated inferior oblique (IO) muscle recession in patients with superior oblique palsy (SOP) and persistent hypertropia in abduction.

Methods: Retrospective review of patients with unilateral SOP who were treated with isolated IO recession by a single surgeon (MCB) between January 2008 and December 2017. We included patients with congenital and acquired fourth nerve palsies, with a hyperdeviation of less than 20 prism diopters in primary position and at least 4 prism diopters in abduction by prism and alternate cover test (PACT) during distance fixation.

A 4-year-old girl with maxillary hypoplasia, intermittent exotropia, and high myopia displayed congenital oculonasal synkinesis. We examine the implications for pathogenesis of these disparate craniofacial findings.

Introduction: Few reports in the world have shown a differential effect of hypothyroidism in relation to morbidity and mortality following cardiac surgery.

Objective: To determine the association between preoperative hypothyroidism, composite and disaggregated outcomes of mortality and complications in patients undergoing first-time isolated myocardial revascularization surgery.

Methods: Historical cohort of patients undergoing myocardial revascularization between January 2008 and December 2014, with 626 patients included for evaluation of the composite and disaggregated outcomes of in-hospital mortality and complications (atrial fibrillation, surgical site infection and reoperation due to bleeding).

Plasmablastic lymphoma is a rare and aggressive subtype of diffuse large B cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma, originally described in the oral cavity of male adults with acquired immune deficiency syndrome. It is composed of neoplastic ceils which resemble immunoblasts but present immunophenotype distinctive of plasma cell and Epstein-Barr virus latent infection. In children, it is an even rarer disease.

Fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) is a proangiogenic mitogen that is secreted by an unconventional mechanism, which does not depend on a functional ER-Golgi system. FGF2 is first recruited to the inner leaflet of plasma membranes, in a process that is mediated by the phosphoinositide PtdIns(4,5)P(2). On the extracellular side, membrane-proximal FGF2-binding sites provided by heparan-sulfate proteoglycans are essential for trapping and accumulating FGF2 in the extracellular space.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on evaluating a new pediatric formulation of the hepatitis A vaccine, Avaxim 80 units, given to children aged 12 months to 15 years in Argentina.
  • Over 99% of initially seronegative children developed immunity within two weeks after the first dose, and all showed strong immune responses before and after the booster dose.
  • The vaccine was found to be safe, with only mild and transient local reactions; systemic side effects such as fever were minimal and resolved quickly.
