Type VI Secretion Systems (T6SS), widely distributed in Gram-negative bacteria, contribute to interbacterial competition and pathogenesis through the translocation of effector proteins to target cells. harbor 5 pathogenicity islands encoding T6SS (SPI-6, SPI-19, SPI-20, SPI-21 and SPI-22), in which a limited number of effector proteins have been identified. Previous analyses by our group focused on the identification of candidate T6SS effectors and cognate immunity proteins in genomes deposited in public databases.

A Salmonella enterica serovar Abony outbreak occurred during January-April 2024 in Chile. Genomic evidence indicated that the outbreak strain was a clone of reference strain WDCM 00029, which is routinely used in microbiological quality control tests. When rare or unreported serovars cause human infections, clinicians and health authorities should request strain characterization.

  • Lung cancer, particularly lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), is the most common cause of cancer death in the U.S. and requires careful monitoring after surgical removal due to high recurrence risk.
  • Traditional methods of assessing tumor grading are labor-intensive and may vary between observers, leading to inconsistencies in treatment planning.
  • This study introduces a deep learning model with a dual-attention architecture that effectively predicts the 5-year recurrence risk of LUAD post-surgery, outperforming existing methods and enhancing decision-making in patient treatment.

Objectives: The prognosis of bone and joint infections (BJI) caused by Gram-negative bacilli (GNB) worsens significantly in the face of fluoroquinolone-resistance. In this setting, scarce pre-clinical and clinical reports suggest that intravenous beta-lactams plus colistin may improve outcome. Our aim was to assess the efficacy and safety of this treatment in a well-characterized prospective cohort.

Article Synopsis
  • The human Integrator complex, comprising 15 subunits, is crucial for processing small nuclear RNAs and splicing messenger RNAs, while also regulating RNA polymerase II activity at gene promoters in response to growth factors.
  • Mutations in a specific subunit of the Integrator complex are linked to various tumors, particularly colorectal cancer, where deregulation is observed in 8.3% of cases from a study in La Rioja, Spain.
  • The study suggests that poor function of the Integrator complex, indicated by elevated unprocessed snRNA levels, is a negative prognostic biomarker for colorectal cancer, and highlights how early screening and molecular profiling can enhance patient survival rates.

The protein encoded by COQ7 is required for CoQ synthesis in humans, hydroxylating 3-demethoxyubiquinol (DMQ) in the second to last steps of the pathway. COQ7 mutations lead to a primary CoQ deficiency syndrome associated with a pleiotropic neurological disorder. This study shows the clinical, physiological, and molecular characterization of four new cases of CoQ primary deficiency caused by five mutations in COQ7, three of which have not yet been described, inducing mitochondrial dysfunction in all patients.
