Sexual Motivators and Endorsement of Models Describing Sexual Response of Men Undergoing Androgen Deprivation Therapy for Advanced Prostate Cancer.

Background: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) administered against metastatic prostate cancer has significant side effects including sexual dysfunction.

Aim: To assess sexual interest and motivators for sex during ADT and to find out what model of sexuality best describes the sexual experience for men during this treatment.

Methods: A questionnaire was mailed to patients who had received ADT for ≥6 months.

Weekly ascorbic acid infusion in castration-resistant prostate cancer patients: a single-arm phase II trial.

Background: Ascorbic acid (AA) has cytotoxic properties at concentrations that can only be achieved through intravenous (IV) administration in humans. Treatment with intravenous AA is widely and increasingly used in complementary medicine despite a lack of clinical evidence for the efficacy of this treatment.

Methods: This non-comparative, single-center, phase II trial included patients with chemotherapy-naïve, metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) from an outpatient clinic to evaluate the efficacy and safety of IV AA therapy.

Risk of Adverse Pregnancy Outcome After Paternal Exposure to Methotrexate Within 90 Days Before Pregnancy.

Objective: To study the association between paternal exposure to methotrexate within the 90-day period before pregnancy and congenital malformations and stillbirth in the offspring.

Methods: We conducted a nationwide register study. Our cohort consisted of all live births in Denmark between 1997 and 2011 identified from the Medical Birth Registry.

Simvastatin and oxidative stress in humans: A randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

Simvastatin reduces the blood concentration of cholesterol by inhibiting hydroxymethylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol synthesis, and thereby reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease. In addition, simvastatin treatment leads to a reduction in fluxes in mitochondrial respiratory complexes I and II and might thereby reduce the formation of reactive oxygen species, which have been implicated in the pathogenesis of arteriosclerosis. Therefore, we hypothesized that simvastatin may reduce oxidative stress in humans in vivo.

Diclofenac/misoprostol during early pregnancy and the risk of miscarriage: a Danish nationwide cohort study.

Introduction: Misoprostol can be used in the prevention of gastric ulcer in treatment with diclofenac and is used in rheumatic diseases. Since misoprostol causes contractions of the uterus, it can also be used to induce abortions when administrated vaginally. The aim of the study was to investigate if early pregnancy exposure to oral diclofenac/misoprostol was associated with miscarriage.

Elimination of ascorbic acid after high-dose infusion in prostate cancer patients: a pharmacokinetic evaluation.

Treatment with high-dose intravenous (IV) ascorbic acid (AA) is used in complementary and alternative medicine for various conditions including cancer. Cytotoxicity to cancer cell lines has been observed with millimolar concentrations of AA. Little is known about the pharmacokinetics of high-dose IV AA.

Preferred treatment frequency in patients receiving androgen deprivation therapy for advanced prostate cancer.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess patient preference regarding the length of treatment intervals of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) with gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists for prostate cancer.

Material And Methods: The study was conducted as a questionnaire-based, cross-sectional study at a large university hospital. A specific questionnaire was developed based on current literature, clinical experience and a pilot phase of the study.

Inoculation of Sphingobacterium multivorum in the prostate by prostate biopsy.

This report describes three cases of infection with Sphingobacterium multivorum after transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy. The pathogen is ubiquitous in water and soil but has been described fewer than 10 times causing infections in humans. An infection hygiene evaluation identified and changed a step in the biopsy process in order to reduce the risk of inoculating the patient with environmental microorganisms.

Microdialysis for detection of renal ischemia after experimental renal transplantation.

Purpose: We designed an experimental renal transplantation model and evaluated microdialysis as a detector of induced postoperative ischemia, a feared complication that when caused by vascular thrombosis most often causes renal graft loss.

Materials And Methods: Two microdialysis catheters were placed in the left kidney in 16 pigs, including 1 superficially in the renal cortex and 1 fixed on the renal capsule. Two-hour baseline measurements were made at steady state, after which the kidney was removed and subjected to warm and cold ischemia.
