[Evaluation of refractive values in patients working for several years at video display terminals. A long-term study].

The authors discuss whether working at a VDT (video display terminal) over a period of years causes non-reversible changes in refraction, especially if it induces a drift towards myopia. A total of 107 persons who had been working at VDT for many years were examined at 2-year intervals and the observations compared with those recorded in 69 persons who had never worked at a VDT. Changes in the correction strengths of their spectacles were evaluated.

[A questionable parasitic macular cyst].

A 60 year old male patient is introduced who developed a loss of vision caused by chorioretinal cystic alteration in the macula of the left eye 9 months after a routine extracapsular cataract surgery with implantation of posterior chamber lens. There existed no other general symptoms, hematologic values and serology were regular. Having discussed literature the diagnosis of solitary Toxocara canis granuloma was produced.

[Eye injuries in squash].

The characteristics of a type of ball game that has only become popular in the last ten to twenty years, the game of Squash are being described. The causes and degree of possible ocular injuries are based on personal observation and the available literature. The conclusion is that patients presenting respective ocular changes should not attempt to play this hazardous ball game.

[Supplementary instrument for lens removal (author's transl)].

A combination of a sponge holder and a squint hook is described as a supplementary instrument for intracapsular lens cryo-extraction with this instrument. Quick changes of manipulations during lens removal and other surgical manoeuvres are possible.

[A new sieve-test for testing colour vision (author's transl)].

From our results we can be sure that the colour test disk is at least as reliable for mass testing for colour blindness as the Ishihara isochromatic colour plates. In practice the test disk has the advantage of constancy of testing conditions and easy and quick procedure. If it is necessary to differentiate between protopia and deuteropia the colour test disk is significantly better Ishihara's colour plates.

[Legal questions in ophthalmology after head injuries (author's transl)].

After a short review of the literature the reduction of earning capacity on the common labour market in cases of decrease of fusion, convergence and accommodation caused by head injuries is discussed and percentual values are proposed. Hereby not only the single reduction of one of these functions but also combined occurrence is allowed for and values for the total reduction of earning capacity are considered.
