Efficient and safe carriers of genetic material are crucial for advancing gene therapy. Three new series of cationic dendritic nanocarriers based on a carbosilane scaffold, differentiated by peripheral modifications: saccharide (CS-glyco), amine (CS-N), and phosphonium dendrimers (CS-P) were designed for binding, protecting, and releasing polyanionic compounds like therapeutic siRNA. Besides introducing synthetic methodology, this study brings a unique direct interstructural comparison of 16 dendritic nanovector's characteristics, addressing a gap in typical research that focuses on uniform structural types.

The study encompassed 70,057 participants from the Västerbotten intervention program cohort in Northern Sweden with a median age of 40 years at baseline. High-resolution dispersion models were employed to estimate source-specific particulate matter (PM) concentrations, such as PM and PM from traffic, exhaust, and biomass (mainly wood) burning, at the residential addresses of each participant.

In this study, we aimed to compare the toxicity of organic compound mixtures extracted from particulate matter (PM extracts) produced by neat gasoline (E0) and a blend containing 15% ethanol (E15), which is offered as an alternative to non-renewable fossil fuels. Human lung BEAS-2B cells were exposed to PM extracts, and biomarkers of genotoxicity, such as DNA damage evaluated by comet assay, micronuclei formation, levels of phosphorylated histone H2AX, the expression of genes relevant to the DNA damage response, and exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), were determined.

We investigated the impact of BaP on the process of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in normal human bronchial epithelial HBEC-12KT cells. Early morphological changes after 2-week exposure were accompanied with induction of SERPINB2, IL1, CDKN1A/p21 (linked with cell cycle delay) and chemokine CXCL5.

A rapid review of the literature was conducted and completed from four different databases, including PubMed, CINAHL, Science Direct, and Academic Search Complete. The literature review was completed with the use of a single-string Boolean search to maximize the number of articles returned.

Neuroinflammation and other AD-associated pathologies are also suggested to increase the risk of serious SARS-CoV-2 infection. Anosmia is a common neurological symptom reported in COVID-19 and in early AD.

We compared the genotoxic potential of diverse DNA damaging agents, and focused on their effects on the DNA damage response (DDR) and cell fate in human lung cells BEAS-2B. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons [PAHs; benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P), 1-nitropyrene (1-NP)] induced DNA strand breaks and oxidative damage to DNA; anticancer drugs doxorubicin (DOX) and 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) were less effective.

Health effects per unit PM seem to increase in countries with low PM, but also near local pollution sources (e.g.

The advances in galectin-targeted therapy must be based on a deep understanding of the mechanism of ligand-protein recognition. Carbosilane dendrimers, the well-defined and finely tunable nanoscaffolds with low toxicity, are promising for multivalent carbohydrate ligand presentation to target galectin receptors.

Unexpectedly, research in a heavily polluted region of the Czech Republic, with traditional heavy industry, revealed repeatedly the lowest frequency of micronuclei in the season with the highest concentrations of air pollutants including carcinogenic benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P). Molecular findings have been collected for more than 10 years from various locations of the Czech Republic, with differing quality of ambient air.

In these processes, alveolar macrophages have an essential role and timely modulation of the macrophage phenotype is imperative in the onset and resolution of inflammatory responses. This study aimed to investigate, the immunomodulating properties of two industrially relevant high aspect ratio nanomaterials, namely nanocellulose and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), in an alveolar macrophage model.

This study aimed to evaluate the concentrations of 6 indicator polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), 10 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), 34 halogenated flame retardants (HFRs), 29 perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and 15 polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs). PCBs, OCPs, most of HFRs and PCNs were identified/quantified by gas chromatography coupled to (tandem) mass spectrometry (GC-MS(/MS)), while PFAS, hexabromocyclododecane isomers (HBCD), brominated phenols, and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS).

The objective of this study was to assess the nutritional quality of the maternal diet, and its contamination by persistent organic pollutants (POPs), in pregnant women living in two areas of the Czech Republic with different levels of air pollution, and subsequently to assess the relationship of these two factors with birth weight and neonatal oxidative stress. To determine the level of oxidative stress, 8-isoprostane concentrations in umbilical cord plasma were measured.

This study focused on DNA methylation profiles in a human cohort, comprising 125 nonsmoking city policemen (sampled twice), living and working in three localities (Prague, Ostrava and Ceske Budejovice) of the Czech Republic, who spent the majority of their working time outdoors. The main characterization of the localities, differing by major sources of air pollution, was defined by the stationary air pollution monitoring of PM2.

The adverse effects of air pollutants on the respiratory and cardiovascular systems are unquestionable. However, in recent years, indications of effects beyond these organ systems have become more evident. Traffic-related air pollution has been linked with neurological diseases, exacerbated cognitive dysfunction, and Alzheimer's disease.

Emissions from road traffic are among the major contributors to air pollution worldwide and represent a serious environmental health risk. Although traffic-related pollution has been most commonly associated with diesel engines, increasing evidence suggests that gasoline engines also produce a considerable amount of potentially hazardous particulate matter (PM). The primary objective of this study was to compare the intrinsic toxic properties of the organic components of PM, generated by a conventional gasoline engine fueled with neat gasoline (E0), or gasoline-ethanol blend (15 % ethanol, v/v, E15).
