Yeo's index, the product of the mitral leaflet separation index and dimensionless index of mitral valve (MV), was recently described to accurately identify severe rheumatic mitral stenosis (MS). We assess the association between Yeo's index and clinical outcomes in patients with rheumatic MS. We studied 297 patients with rheumatic MS.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine if the HFPEF score could predict heart failure outcomes in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) who have preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF).
  • A total of 955 patients were analyzed, with those scoring higher on the HFPEF scale tending to have more severe symptoms and comorbidities, showing lower LVEF and impaired heart function.
  • Findings indicated that a high HFPEF score is linked to poorer survival rates and higher rates of heart failure hospitalizations, particularly influencing outcomes based on factors like female sex, Asian ethnicity, and existing heart conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • Yeo's Index is a new measurement for determining the severity of rheumatic mitral stenosis (MS), based on mitral leaflet separation and a dimensionless index.
  • In a study involving 237 patients, it was found that Yeo's index ≤ 0.26 cm had a high sensitivity (93%) and specificity (87.5%) for identifying severe MS, while a threshold of ≤ 0.15 cm was effective for very severe MS, with sensitivity and specificity values of 83.6% and 94.3%, respectively.
  • The index's effectiveness was consistent across patients with isolated MS and those with mixed valve disease, and the presence of atrial fibrillation did not affect its accuracy.

Background: Patients with migraines, particularly those with auras, may present with stroke. Atrial fibrillation is a known risk factor for stroke. With common pathophysiological factors between migraines and atrial fibrillation, we aimed to clarify the association between migraine and atrial fibrillation in this systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: A mitral leaflet separation index (MLSI), measuring the anatomical separation of the mitral valve (MV) leaflet tips in diastole, was previously described as an accurate method of assessing mitral stenosis (MS). We propose a novel modification of the MLSI by including a hemodynamic assessment which we term Yeo's index that may improve its diagnostic performance.

Methods And Results: We retrospectively studied 174 patients with varying severity of MS without significant mitral regurgitation, aortic valve disease or ventricular septal defect.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the prognostic significance of left atrial volume index (LAVI) in patients with degenerative mitral stenosis (DMS), highlighting the correlation of LAVI with patient outcomes.
  • Patients were divided into two groups based on LAVI size; those with enlarged LAVI had worse prognosis, higher left ventricular mass index, and more severe heart conditions compared to those with normal-sized LAVI.
  • Findings indicate that an enlarged LAVI (greater than 34 ml/m2) is linked to increased mortality risk, making it a significant predictor of poor outcomes in DMS patients.

Patients with preexisting kidney disease or acute kidney injury had poorer outcomes in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) illness. Lymphopenia was associated with more severe illness. Risk stratification with simple laboratory tests may help appropriate site patients in a cost-effective manner and ease the burden on healthcare systems.

Article Synopsis
  • * A thorough search of clinical trial databases revealed 111 studies with over 103,000 patients, focusing on differences in outcomes for type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
  • * Results indicated that while SGLT1/2 inhibitors reduced the risk of heart attack and stroke in type 2 diabetes patients, SGLT2 inhibitors were more effective at lowering HbA1c levels; however, SGLT1/2 inhibitors had a higher risk of

Background: Infective endocarditis (IE) confers significant mortality and morbidity in patients with underlying mitral stenosis (MS), with both diseased native valves and after valvular procedures.

Purpose: We examined the clinical and echocardiographic parameters in association with the development of IE on patients with significant MS.

Methods: A total of 478 consecutive patients with index echocardiographic diagnosis of significant mitral stenosis (mitral valve area <1.

Liver dysfunction in patients with COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) has been described. However, it is not clear if the presence of abnormal liver function tests at presentation was related to underlying undiagnosed liver disease, or a result of the viral infection. We retrospectively examined the first 554 consecutive polymerase chain reaction positive SARS-CoV-2 patients admitted from February 2020 to April 2020 to our academic medical centre.
