Conservation translocations have become increasingly popular for 'rewilding' areas that have lost their native fauna. These multispecies translocations are complex and need to consider the requirements of each individual species as well as the influence of likely interactions among them. The Dirk Hartog Island National Park Ecological Restoration Project, , aspires to restore ecological function to Western Australia's largest island.

Hematologic and serum biochemistry blood reference intervals were established for the endangered marsupial, the bilby (Macrotis lagotis). Blood samples were collected from 135 bilbies that were housed in a captive breeding colony or were free ranging in a 10-ha exclosure. Statistical analyses were undertaken, and significant differences in parameters were found depending on age, sex, and captive or free-ranging status of animals.

Gilbert's potoroo (Potorous gilbertii) was rediscovered in 1994 after having been presumed extinct for 120 years. Estimates indicate fewer than 40 individuals remain at Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve on the south coast of Western Australia although a translocated population of approximately 20 animals has recently been established on nearby Bald Island. A captive breeding facility has been established adjacent to the mainland population but few young have been produced (8 since 1995).

The western barred bandicoot (Perameles bougainville) is an endangered species, free ranging on only two islands off the coast of Western Australia (Dorre and Bernier Islands). Conservation efforts are currently directed at reintroducing these marsupials into predator-proof enclosures and habitats in historical distribution ranges on the mainland in the southwest of Western Australia and in South Australia. In September 2000, 19 western barred bandicoots were captured on Bernier Island for translocation, and 11 of these had evidence of at least one of the following eye conditions: corneal opacity, conjunctivitis, ocular discharge, and blepharitis.
