BACKGROUND The elderly population in the United States and the world is rapidly increasing. With aging, immunity and kidney function decrease, thus predisposing people to viral illnesses for which there is no effective prophylaxis. Herpes zoster afflicts the elderly and other immunocompromised patients, like those with end-stage renal disease, transplant recipients, and cancer patients, causing significant morbidity and sometimes mortality.

Bis-diimidazolylidine complexes of nickel: investigations into nickel catalyzed coupling reactions.

Air and moisture stable homoleptic bis(diimidazolylidine)nickel(II) complexes, ([(diNHC)(2)Ni](2+)) 3a,b and their corresponding silver(I) 4a,b and palladium(II) 5a,b complexes were synthesized and characterized by NMR and single crystal X-ray analysis. The catalytic potential of complex 3a was assessed in Mizoroki-Heck and Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions. In the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction, nickel precatalyst 3a was active for the coupling of aryl chlorides as well as aryl fluorides.

Inflammatory pseudotumors of the central nervous system.

Inflammatory pseudotumor is a disease with unsettled pathogenesis. The brain is a rare site of occurrence. The aim of this study is to investigate ALK-1 protein expression and IgG4-positive plasma cells detection in 4 intracranial inflammatory pseudotumors.

Vulvar basal cell carcinoma in China: a 13-year review.

Objective: We conducted a 12-year retrospective review of vulvar basal cell carcinoma (BCC) in a Chinese population.

Study Design: Medical records and histopathologic reports were examined from 5 major Hospitals in Hong Kong to list all patients diagnosed with vulvar BCC. Clinical data and histologic materials were reviewed.

Cytology of chordoid meningioma: a series of five cases with emphasis on differential diagnoses.

Background: Chordoid meningioma is a rare meningioma variant characterised by epithelioid cord-like tumour cells in a myxoid stroma. It is classified as grade II (World Health Organization) tumours, as they have a tendency to behave more aggressively than traditional meningiomas and have a greater likelihood of recurrence.

Aims: To report the features of intraoperative imprint smears of five cases of chordoid meningioma.
