Background: Performance of bariatric surgery in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is controversial. The advent of highly active antiretroviral treatment (HAART) has dramatically reduced the progression of HIV/AIDS, so that these individuals live longer, with nearly undetectable viral loads, and thus may develop obesity and similar obesity-related comorbidity as occurs in the general population.
