Soapwort (Saponaria officinalis) is a flowering plant from the Caryophyllaceae family with a long history of human use as a traditional source of soap. Its detergent properties are because of the production of polar compounds (saponins), of which the oleanane-based triterpenoid saponins, saponariosides A and B, are the major components. Soapwort saponins have anticancer properties and are also of interest as endosomal escape enhancers for targeted tumor therapies.

The aim of this study was to explore whether the Lung Immune Prognostic Index (LIPI) is associated with clinical outcomes in patients with metastatic gastric cancer (MGC) treated with anti-PD-1 and chemotherapy. Patients with MGC treated with an anti-PD-1 therapy or chemotherapy were enrolled. This study was composed of two cohorts including 266 patients in the anti-PD-1-treated group and 139 patients in the chemotherapy-treated group.

Background And Aims: Biomarkers for systemic inflammation have been introduced into clinical practice for risk-rating in cancer patients' treatment. This study is aimed at confirming the prognostic role of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) as an effective biomarker for patients with metastatic gastric cancer (MGC) receiving anti-PD-1 agents.

Method: Patients with MGC who received anti-PD-1 treatment at the Chinese PLA General Hospital between January 2016 and November 2020 were reviewed.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the relationship between pretreatment hemoglobin (Hb) levels and survival outcomes in patients with advanced or metastatic gastric cancer undergoing PD-1 inhibitor immunotherapy.
  • - A total of 137 patients were analyzed, revealing that those with normal Hb levels had significantly better progression-free survival (7.8 months) and overall survival (14.4 months) compared to those with decreased Hb levels.
  • - Although the objective response rate and disease control rate were similar between the two groups, the research concluded that baseline Hb levels are a significant independent predictor of survival in these patients.
