Article Synopsis
  • - This study examined how the cause of rotator cuff injuries (RCIs)—either traumatic or non-traumatic—affects the recovery outcomes after surgical repair.
  • - A total of 73 patients were divided into a traumatic group (31 patients) and a non-traumatic group (42 patients), with evaluations conducted both before and after surgery to assess factors like shoulder mobility and muscle strength.
  • - Findings showed that while the non-traumatic group had better initial scores and longer disease duration, post-surgery outcomes were similar across both groups; factors like full-layer tears and fat infiltration were identified as significant predictors of recovery success.

Background: There is currently no dedicated measurement for assessing nursing students' study interest in China. Considering the good reliability, validity, and widespread applicability of the Study Interest Questionnaire-Short Form (SIQ-SF), the objective of this study was to validate its usage among Chinese nursing students.

Methods: The translation and cross-cultural adaptation rigorously followed the modified Brislin model.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explored how family health influences mental health outcomes like depression and anxiety, focusing on sleep quality as a potential mediating factor, and considering different living situations that can affect social support.
  • - Conducted in five regions of China with nearly 5,000 participants, researchers assessed family health, sleep quality, and mental health symptoms using various standardized scales and mediation analysis.
  • - Results showed a significant negative correlation between family health and depression or anxiety, with sleep quality serving as a mediator; both living with family and shared accommodations influenced this relationship.

Background: It is imperative to use a validated tool to measure and understand health behavior as it greatly impacts health status. It has been demonstrated that the Health Behavior Inventory - Short Form (HBI-SF) is valid in several countries. The purpose of this study was to translate the HBI-SF into Chinese and test its psychometric properties.

Background: Esophageal cancer is often overlooked in its early stages, with approximately 70% of patients being diagnosed at a locally advanced or late stage. Surgical treatment and chemotherapy are the mainstays of esophageal cancer management. However, for locally advanced esophageal cancer, both surgery alone and chemotherapy alone have high rates of recurrence and metastasis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how the timing of surgical repair impacts recovery outcomes for traumatic and non-traumatic rotator cuff injuries (RCIs).
  • A total of 87 patients were examined, comparing results from early repairs (within 3 months) versus delayed repairs (after 3 months) using multiple evaluation methods.
  • Findings suggest that early surgical intervention for traumatic RCIs leads to better outcomes, including lower retear rates compared to delayed repair, while non-traumatic injuries also showed benefits but not as pronounced.

Background: Education in nursing has noticed a positive effect of simulation-based education. There are many studies available on the effects of simulation-based education, but most of those involve a single institution, nonrandomized controlled trials, small sample sizes and subjective evaluations of the effects. The purpose of this multicenter randomized controlled trial was to evaluate the effects of high-fidelity simulation, computer-based simulation, high-fidelity simulation combined with computer-based simulation, and case study on undergraduate nursing students.

Article Synopsis
  • Suboptimal health is an important phase before chronic diseases develop, and understanding social determinants of health (SDH) can help healthcare providers address individual needs and improve health outcomes.
  • A study conducted in China identified three distinct profiles based on various SDH indicators, revealing significant differences in health status among these groups.
  • The findings show that individuals in the Adversely Burdened Vulnerability Group are at the highest risk for suboptimal health, while those in the Advantaged Resilience Group have the lowest risk, highlighting the importance of tailored interventions.

Background: The prevalence of suboptimal health status has been increasing worldwide, posing a significant challenge to public health. Meanwhile, family health has been recognised as an important factor influencing individual health outcomes. However, the mechanisms through which family health affects suboptimal health status remain unclear.

Background: Despite the availability of a wide range of critical thinking instruments, there was no original design for nurses that has been translated into Chinese. However, only instruments designed specifically for the nursing discipline would be reliable. This study aimed to translate, culturally adapt, and validate the Yoon Critical Thinking Disposition Instrument in the Chinese context.

Background: Caring is the essence and core of nursing. Current studies on the effect of gender on nurses' perception of caring have been inconsistent. Most of these studies were quantitative and conducted before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: Previous studies have explored the influence of interest in learning on caring and critical thinking, as well as the relationship between caring and critical thinking. However, the mediating effect of critical thinking in interest learning and caring among nursing students has not been clarified.

Methods: Nursing students who enrolled for the 2021/2022 academic year in diploma, undergraduate, or graduate programs in five provinces of China (Guangdong, Sichuan, Jiangsu, Hunan and Macao).

Article Synopsis
  • * A systematic review and meta-analysis of 33 studies, involving 4,077 nursing students, revealed that high-fidelity simulations with scenario validity improved knowledge significantly, while both types of simulations (with and without scenario validity) were equally effective in enhancing skills.
  • * Smaller groups of six or fewer students showed a tendency towards better knowledge and skill outcomes, suggesting that nursing instructors should focus on maintaining scenario validity and limiting group sizes to optimize learning.

Background: According to traditional Chinese medicine theory, a Qi-deficiency constitution is characterized by a lower voice frequency, shortness of breath, reluctance to speak, an introverted personality, emotional instability, and timidity. People with Qi-deficiency constitution are prone to repeated colds and have a higher probability of chronic diseases and depression. However, a person with a Balanced constitution is relatively healthy in all physical and psychological aspects.

  • Prebriefing in high-fidelity simulation (HFS) is essential for preparing nursing students, but its impact on learning outcomes has been less studied compared to other simulation phases.
  • A meta-analysis of 42 studies with nearly 4926 Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students showed no significant differences in various educational outcomes between HFS with and without prebriefing.
  • However, HFS that included prebriefing resulted in improved collaboration among students, indicating that while prebriefing doesn't enhance all areas, it does facilitate teamwork more effectively.

Article Synopsis
  • This study aims to investigate how varying lengths of prebriefing, simulation, and debriefing in high-fidelity simulation (HFS) impact the knowledge and skills of nursing students.
  • It involved a systematic review of 44 studies, with 23 analyzed, using a process that included data extraction and meta-analysis to assess the effectiveness of different simulation lengths.
  • Findings suggest that shorter debriefing and simulation sessions enhance knowledge acquisition, while longer sessions are better for developing skills in undergraduate nursing students.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examines the impact of high-fidelity simulation (HFS) in teaching undergraduate nursing students through a meta-analysis of various research methods.
  • The findings indicate that HFS significantly enhances knowledge, skills, collaboration, caring, and student interest in learning compared to other teaching methods.
  • However, HFS is similarly effective as traditional methods for developing critical thinking, self-confidence, and student satisfaction, suggesting educators should select the best teaching approach based on desired outcomes.

Introduction: The diagnosis of pericardial effusion may be elusive, and only diagnosed with echocardiography.

Case Reports: Here we report the cases of two patients who presented to the emergency centre (EC) with dyspnoea, and their chest X-rays (CXR) revealed the "water bottle sign", which is the typical appearance of the cardiac silhouette that is present when there is a large pericardial effusion.

Discussion: This clinched the diagnosis of pericardial effusion, where the diagnosis may have otherwise been delayed.
