View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjectives: The aim of this study was to assess the systemic effects of treating severe widespread periodontitis in a population of otherwise healthy individuals by examining treatment associated changes in markers of inflammation that are also implicated in cardiovascular atherosclerotic diseases. The potential impact of specific polymorphisms in cytokine genes known to influence both periodontitis and cardiovascular diseases was also examined.
Materials And Methods: A convenience sample of patients affected with severe generalised periodontitis was enrolled into a prospective single blind longitudinal intervention trial with a 6 months follow-up.
Severe periodontitis is associated with elevated inflammatory markers in otherwise healthy populations. However, the nature of this association has not been determined. The levels of fucosylated glycoproteins in various cancers and inflammatory processes have been a subject of intense study. The level of fucosyltransferases and intracellular GDP-L-fucose, a sugar nucleotide and a common donor substrate for all fucosyltransferases, may regulate the level of fucosylated glycoproteins. This study reports on the determination of GDP-L-fucose levels in human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and surrounding tissues, using a recently established high-throughput assay system.

Its molecular basis has been identified as a defect in the transporter of GDP-l-fucose into the Golgi lumen, which reduces the availability of the substrate for fucosyltransferases. During metabolic radiolabeling experiments using [3H]fucose, LAD II fibroblasts incorporated significantly less radiolabel compared with control cells.

However, unlike other glycoprotein-containing viruses that use host-encoded enzymes in the endoplasmic reticulum-Golgi to glycosylate their proteins, PBCV-1 encodes at least many, if not all, of the glycosyltransferases used to glycosylate its structural proteins. As described here, PBCV-1 also encodes two open reading frames that resemble bacterial and mammalian enzymes involved in de novo GDP-L-fucose biosynthesis.

We have purified IDO and tested its activity in in vitro models of T cell activation. Material And Methods: 172 patients with advanced chronic periodontitis were recruited in 12 centers in 7 countries. All patients had at least one intrabony defect of > or =3mm.
Background: The aims of the present multi-center, randomized, controlled clinical trial were: 1) to compare the efficacy of the simplified papilla preservation flap with and without a barrier membrane in deep intrabony defects; 2) to evaluate the postoperative morbidity and surgical complications; and 3) to preliminarily test the impact of baseline tooth mobility on clinical outcomes.
Methods: This parallel group, randomized, multi-center, controlled clinical trial involved 112 patients in 8 periodontal practices in 4 countries. A deep intrabony defect in each patient was accessed with the simplified papilla preservation flap.
Glucose-1-phosphate thymidylyltransferase is the first enzyme in the biosynthesis of dTDP-l-rhamnose, the precursor of l-rhamnose, an essential component of surface antigens, such as the O-lipopolysaccharide, mediating virulence and adhesion to host tissues in many microorganisms. The enzyme catalyses the formation of dTDP-glucose, from dTTP and glucose 1-phosphate, as well as its pyrophosphorolysis. To shed more light on the catalytic properties of glucose-1-phosphate thymidylyltransferase from Escherichia coli, specifically distinguishing between ping pong and sequential ordered bi bi reaction mechanisms, the enzyme kinetic properties have been analysed in the presence of different substrates and inhibitors.

Background, Aims: This investigation was designed to evaluate the null hypothesis of no differences in GTR outcomes in intrabony defects at vital and successfully root-canal-treated teeth.
Method: 208 consecutive patients with one intrabony defect each were enrolled. Based on tooth vitality, the treated population was divided at baseline into 2 groups: one with 41 non-vital teeth and the other with 167 vital teeth.
Advances in periodontal science and practice over the last decade have radically changed the understanding of periodontal diseases and have opened new, exciting prospects for both medical and surgical therapy of periodontal diseases. Establishment of the aetiology and pathogenesis of periodontitis, understanding of the unique genetic and environmental susceptibility profile of affected subjects, and recognition of the systemic implications of periodontal infections are the key research findings. The use of randomised, controlled, clinical trials has allowed the development of evidence-based periodontology.
