This study discusses the role of orthodontic treatment as an adjunct to the control and treatment of periodontal disease conditions, and describes a clinical case of severe anterior mandibular crowding and periodontal disease followed up for nine years and three months after orthodontic treatment completion. Malocclusion impaired proper dental hygiene, which led to bone loss and development of a periodontal abscess between mandibular canines and lateral incisors. After scaling and root planing, orthodontic treatment was initiated with extraction of the four second premolars, to correct the deficiency detected in cephalometric and model analysis.

Previous studies have suggested that phototherapy may modulate orthodontic tooth movement and the incidence of root resorption. We aimed to identify a minimal dose-response relationship to LED therapy with regard to orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) and root resorption in rats. Forty-eight male Wistar rats were divided into six groups with equal and random distribution: control (C) no intervention; three daily LED irradiation (CLED); submitted only to OTM (RR); OTM and LED irradiation on the first day (LED1); OTM and two LED irradiation on the first and second days (LED2); and OTM and three LED irradiation on the first, second, and third days (LED3).

The aims of this study were to discuss the use of orthodontics for oral rehabilitation in patients, particularly for dealing with bone defects, and to present a clinical case in which the orthodontic extrusive remodeling approach was used for bone gain in the posterior maxillary region, with subsequent implant placement. After 18 months of treatment, the dimensions of the alveolar process were restored and an implant was fixed in the maxillary region, with appropriate bone and gingival levels. Based on the literature and clinical evidence, orthodontic extrusion may be considered as an alternative to surgery to obtain a suitable implant site.

Root resorption is a variable to be considered in induced tooth movement (ITM). It is related to root morphology and alveolar bone crest, and also to the types of forces exerted by mechanotherapy. This histometric study evaluated the predominance of root resorption among roots of different dimensions, following ITM with different types of forces and at different time intervals.

This study evaluated whether periodontal ligament (PL) thickness varied with root size and examined the possible influence of this variation on orthodontic mechanics. Measurements were taken of the maxillary left first molar in 54 male Wistar rats. Mean mesial and distal PL thicknesses were compared between the intermediate buccal and mesiobuccal roots using paired Student's t-tests with a 5% significance level.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurence of compensation in mesiodistal axial inclinations of canines in skeletal malocclusions patients. The sample consisted of 25 Angle Class II, division 1 malocclusion (group 1) and 19 Angle Class III malocclusion patients (group 2). After measurement of dental angulations through a method that associates plaster model photography and AutoCad software, comparisons between the groups were performed by T-test for independent samples.

We describe a young female patient suffering from a PEComa (perivascular epithelioid cell tumor) of the cecum, incidentally found at an examination made by her family physician. The perivascular epithelioid cell tumor is a very rare tumor, until today reported in a few cases in falciform ligament, uterus, jejunum, terminal ileum, rectum, liver, kidney, lung, pancreas, prostate, and soft tissue of the thigh. This tumor is part of a new group of tumors, comprised of angiomyolipoma, lymphangiomyolipoma, and clear-cell myomelanocytic "sugar" tumor.

Germline mutations within the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene, a key member of the Wnt signalling pathway, have been shown to cause adenoma development in familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), a dominantly inherited predisposition to colorectal cancer. Although it has been suggested for several years that alterations within the Wnt pathway are the underlying events for the development of colorectal adenomas in FAP patients, no detailed analysis of the gene expressions of Wnt pathway members has been available in fresh colorectal tissue of FAP patients, so far. Thus, we investigated potential differences in the expressions of APC and its Wnt partners conductin, beta-catenin, cyclin D1, and c-myc in normal colorectal mucosa and matched adenoma tissue of 14 FAP patients using real-time quantitative PCR.

Background: Laparoscopic adjustable silicone gastric banding (LASGB) has replaced vertical banded gastroplasty (VBG) as the most widespread restrictive bariatric operation in Europe. Although these two procedures are similar in principle, the experience concerning the preoperative examinations and follow-up cannot be arbitrarily transferred from VBG to LASGB. The reasons for and consequences drawn from radiologic and endoscopic examinations are described.

After cholecystectomy a certain number of patients continue to suffer from abdominal symptoms or develop such symptoms postoperatively. The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of postcholecystectomy symptoms with open cholecystectomy during the prelaparoscopic era and those with laparoscopic cholecystectomy 4 years after introduction of the laparoscopic technique. Between July 1988 and June 1989 a total of 163 consecutive patients with elective open cholecystectomy and between September 1994 and August 1995 a total of 234 consecutive patients with elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy were prospectively evaluated using a standard questionnaire about preoperative symptoms, diagnostic modalities, and intraoperative findings.
