Article Synopsis
  • Treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD) is important for improving health outcomes in patients with alcohol-associated cirrhosis, yet it remains underutilized, especially among socioeconomically disadvantaged groups.
  • A study of 196 diverse patients revealed that 67% had ever utilized AUD treatment, while only 32% accessed treatment in the last year; younger patients and those with worse mental health symptoms were more likely to seek treatment.
  • Factors such as older age and better liver disease quality of life were associated with lower treatment utilization, while those with significant anxiety or depression tended to seek treatment more frequently.

Objectives: Current guidelines for methadone titration may unnecessarily delay reaching effective doses for patients using fentanyl, resulting in an increased risk of ongoing fentanyl use, dissatisfaction with treatment, and early dropout. Development and evaluation of rapid methadone induction protocols may improve treatment for patients using fentanyl.

Methods: Retrospective chart review was conducted for patients admitted in 2022 to a single licensed opioid treatment program (OTP) where a rapid induction protocol provides methadone 40 mg on day 1, 60 mg on day 2, and 80 mg on day 3 to patients using fentanyl <65 years old without significant medical comorbidities.

Mental rotation is a critically important, early developing spatial skill that is related to other spatial cognitive abilities. Understanding the early development of this skill, however, requires a developmentally appropriate assessment that can be used with infants, toddlers, and young children. We present here a new eye-tracking task that uses a staircase procedure to assess mental rotation in 12-, 24-, and 36-month-old children (N = 41).

Objectives: To evaluate how performing artists (PAs) with chronic pain may differ on measures of substance use compared to non-PA controls.

Methods: 157 participants reporting chronic pain (89 PAs, 68 non-PA controls) completed an online cross-sectional survey. Participants were assessed for self-reported current pain severity using the Brief Pain Inventory Short-Form, opioid misuse risk using the Screener and Opioid Assessment for Patients with Pain-Revised, opioid withdrawal using the Subjective Opiate Withdrawal Scale, and symptoms of opioid use disorder (OUD) using a modified version of the DSM-V checklist.

A growing body of research has reported on the potential opioid-sparing effects of cannabis and cannabinoids, but less is known about specific mechanisms. The present research examines cannabis-related posts in two large online communities on the Reddit platform ("subreddits") to compare mentions of naturalistic cannabis use by persons self-identifying as actively using opioids versus persons in recovery. We extracted all posts mentioning cannabis-related keywords (e.

Duodenal ectopic varices (DEV) are an uncommon etiology of upper gastrointestinal bleeding and are associated with high mortality. Both the diagnosis and management of DEV are challenging. Multiple treatment modalities exist including endoscopic guided management (ligation and sclerotherapy), surgical resection, transvenous obliteration and transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS), but management depends on the underlying vascular anatomy and underlying pathology.

Article Synopsis
  • Aerosols significantly contribute to the spread of SARS-CoV-2, but the role of the virus on surfaces, especially in hospitals, is less certain.
  • Researchers at UC Davis Medical Center examined surface swabs for SARS-CoV-2 RNA and infectivity during two COVID-19 waves, with findings revealing a drop in virus presence linked to improved cleaning practices.
  • Despite recovering near-complete viral genomes from some samples, the lack of cytopathic effects indicates most contained non-infectious virus, suggesting that surface contamination is unlikely to be a major transmission route.
