We aimed to identify prognostic risk factors for visual deterioration in eyes with epiretinal membrane (ERM) and open-angle glaucoma (OAG) through long-term follow-up. In this retrospective observational case series, we examined consecutive eyes with ERM and OAG over a minimum follow-up of 2 years. Visual outcomes and prognostic factors were analyzed in patients' eyes undergoing ERM peeling with pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) (peeling group) and only observation (observation group).

Childhood glaucoma is one of the major causes of blindness in children, however, its diagnosis is of great challenge. The study aimed to demonstrate and evaluate the performance of a deep-learning (DL) model for detecting childhood glaucoma based on periocular photographs. Primary gaze photographs of children diagnosed with glaucoma with appearance features (corneal opacity, corneal enlargement, and/or globe enlargement) were retrospectively collected from the database of a single referral center.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to examine the prevalence and factors linked to myopia and astigmatism in a large cohort of adults in Japan.
  • A total of 4282 participants were assessed through extensive eye exams and lifestyle questionnaires, revealing significant age and educational influences on refractive errors.
  • The findings showed a high prevalence of myopia in younger individuals, while older individuals had more astigmatism, indicating generational changes and highlights the need for awareness regarding eye health among different age groups.

Purpose: To investigate the intereye correlations between and differences in the rates of visual field (VF) progression in eyes with bilateral open-angle glaucoma.

Study Design: Retrospective, longitudinal, observational study.

Methods: Patients with bilateral open-angle glaucoma with 8 or more reliable 30 - 2 standard automated perimetry tests over a period of more than 2 years were enrolled.

Background: Iris mammillation is a rare disease characterized by the distribution of multiple nodules on the iris surface. The course of uveitic glaucoma with iris mammillation has never been reported.

Case Presentation: A 56-year-old woman, who presented with unilateral decreased vision, visited our hospital for treatment of uveitic glaucoma in the right eye.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compared the surgical outcomes of Baerveldt glaucoma implant (BGI) surgery and trabeculectomy in patients with neovascular glaucoma (NVG) over a period from April 2012 to December 2019 at five clinical centers in Japan.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 100 eyes undergoing BGI and 204 eyes undergoing trabeculectomy, using specific criteria to define surgical success or failure based on intraocular pressure (IOP) post-surgery.
  • Results showed that BGI surgery had a significantly higher success rate than trabeculectomy, especially for maintaining lower IOP levels, with fewer patients in the BGI group needing reoperations compared to those in the trabeculectomy group.

Purpose: To compare early-stage intrableb structural changes after Ex-PRESS surgery using anterior-segment optical coherence tomography between primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and exfoliation glaucoma (XFG).

Methods: Twenty-five POAG eyes and 15 XFG eyes that underwent Ex-PRESS surgery were evaluated. Intrableb images were classified into four categories based on previously reported scattering intensity: high-, medium-, and low-scattering walls and fluid-filled spaces.

Purpose: Trend analysis of visual field (VF) global indices may underestimate the rate of progression in severe glaucoma because of the influence of test points without detectable sensitivity. To test this hypothesis, we compared the rates of change of VF global indices with and without exclusion of undetectable points at various disease stages.

Materials And Methods: Six hundred and forty-eight eyes of 366 glaucoma patients with 8 or more reliable 30-2 standard automated perimetry over more than 2 years were enrolled.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers analyzed 60 eyes from 30 POAG patients with ERMs and compared them to 60 eyes from non-glaucomatous patients with ERMs, using advanced optical coherence tomography (OCT) and visual field tests.
  • * Results indicated that eyes with ERMs in POAG patients showed reduced retinal nerve fiber layer thickness, larger disc cupping, worse visual field outcomes, and a higher usage of glaucoma medication compared to unaffected eyes, suggesting ERMs may signify greater glaucoma severity.
