Development of a Janus tissue adhesive hemostatic patch based on hydrophobically-modified Alaska pollock gelatin.

Uncontrollable hemorrhage from trauma and open surgery leads to a high percentage of death. Even though some patch-type hemostatic materials have been used in the clinic, sufficient tissue adhesion property and the management of tissue adhesion and anti-adhesion have been the challenges. In this report, we designed Janus tissue adhesive hemostatic patch, consisting of Alaska pollock gelatin (Org-ApGltn) as a support layer and decanoyl group-modified ApGltn (C10-ApGltn) with pentaerythritol poly(ethylene glycol) ether tetrasuccinimidyl glutarate (4S-PEG) as an adhesive layer, named as the C10-ApGltn patch.

Sphericity of lymph nodes using 3D-CT predicts metastasis in lung cancer patients.

Background: The presence of mediastinal lymph node metastasis is important because it is related to the treatment and prognosis of lung cancer. Although prevalently used, evaluation of lymph nodes is not always reliable. We introduced sphericity as a criterion for evaluating morphologic differences between metastatic and nonmetastatic nodes.

Maturity onset diabetes of the young (MODY) is a relatively young-onset diabetes mellitus with an autosomal dominant inheritance. Among these phenotypes, MODY3, caused by mutations in HNF1A, is one of the most frequent. Although MODY3 is known to respond markedly to sulfonylureas (SU), many cases require insulin therapy.

Relationship between changes in pulmonary function and patient-reported outcomes of lung cancer surgery.

Purpose: To investigate the relationship between changes in pulmonary function (PF) and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) of lung cancer surgery.

Methods: We recruited 262 patients who underwent lung resection for lung cancer, to evaluate the PROs, using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ)-C30 and the Lung Cancer 13-question supplement (LC13). The patients underwent PF tests and PRO assessments preoperatively (Pre) and 1 year after surgery (Y1).

Perceptions of diabetes management among adolescents with type 1 diabetes and their caregivers: development and validation of the Japanese version of the diabetes family responsibility questionnaire.

The shift in diabetes management responsibility is critical for adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Currently, in Japan, there is insufficient progress in the development of scales for evaluating diabetes management responsibility. We developed the Japanese version of the Diabetes Family Responsibility Questionnaire (DFRQ), a scale to evaluate diabetes management responsibility, and verified its reliability and validity.

Alaska pollock gelatin sealant shows long-term efficacy and safety in a pulmonary air leakage rat model.

Objectives: Postoperative prolonged air leakage is a frequent complication following lung resection. We have shown the high adhesive quality of a newly developed sealant based on a hydrophobically modified Alaska pollock-derived gelatin (ApGltn) sealant in acute in vivo settings. The purpose of this study was to investigate the long-term efficacy and safety of ApGltn sealant using rats as a preclinical model.

Impacts of pleural adhesions on lobectomies for malignant lung tumors.

Objectives: Pleural adhesions are sometimes troublesome in lung lobectomies, and how they affect such surgeries depends on the degree of the adhesion. Herein, pleural adhesions were categorized according to density, tenacity, and coverage, and the impact of each category on lung lobectomy was investigated.

Methods: The cases of 510 patients who consecutively underwent lobectomies were retrospectively reviewed.

Rapid enlargement of pulmonary benign metastasizing leiomyoma with fluid-containing cystic change: a case report.

Background: Pulmonary benign metastasizing leiomyoma (PBML) is a rare disease that can occur in women with a history of uterine leiomyoma. Despite its benign histological features, like a malignancy, leiomyomas can on rare occasion spread to the lung. Typically, PBML presents with asymptomatic multiple solid lung nodules with slow tumor progression, following hysterectomy.

Age at menarche in Japanese patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus: a look at changes since 1960s.

Menarche is delayed in patients with type 1 diabetic mellitus (T1DM) compared to non-diabetics. The purpose of this survey study was to define the age of onset of menarche in Japanese patients with T1DM, as well the secular trends in menarcheal age across the period of 1976-2020 and determine the effects of T1DM and disease management on that age. The study subjects (n = 155) were recruited from among Japanese T1DM patients who visited the outpatient clinic of the Department of Pediatrics, Osaka City University Hospital.

Relationship Between Bedside Ketone Levels and Time to Resolution of Diabetic Ketoacidosis: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Introduction: There is no information on the factors that influence the time required to induce resolution of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). New methods are currently available for bedside measurement of serum 3-hydroxybutyrate (3HB). The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between serum 3HB and the time to DKA resolution.

[Influence of Pleural Adhesions on Thoracoscopic Surgeries for Malignant Lung Tumors].

In the present study, influences of pleural adhesions on thoracoscopic lung surgeries were investigated. A total of 666 consecutive patients who had undergone thoracoscopic surgeries for lung malignant tumors were retrospectively analyzed. Pleural adhesions were present intraoperatively in 289 cases, of which 6 required conversion to thoracotomy due to the adhesions.

Risk factors of middle lobe bronchus kinking following right upper lobectomy.

Background: The incidence rate of kinking of the middle lobe bronchus following right upper lobectomy is higher compared to that with residual lung bronchus following other lobectomies. Bronchial kinking was presumed to be caused by the displacement of the residual lung lobes, but its etiology is unclear. Moreover, prevention methods and effective treatments have not yet been established.

Trajectory and profile of quality of life in patients undergoing lung resection for lung cancer during hospitalization according to the EQ-5D.

Objective: To clarify the trajectory and profile of quality of life (QOL) in lung cancer patients undergoing surgery during hospitalization.

Methods: Among prospectively enrolled 279 patients between 2015 and 2018, we used the EQ-5D-5 levels (EQ-5D-5L), which consist of a descriptive system of five dimensions and a visual analog scale (VAS) (from 0 to 100). The five dimensions are mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain/discomfort, and anxiety/depression, which are rated according to a 5-grade evaluation.

Performance evaluation of case definitions of type 1 diabetes for health insurance claims data in Japan.

Background: No case definition of Type 1 diabetes (T1D) for the claims data has been proposed in Japan yet. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of candidate case definitions for T1D using Electronic health care records (EHR) and claims data in a University Hospital in Japan.

Methods: The EHR and claims data for all the visiting patients in a University Hospital were used.

Efficacy and safety of fast-acting insulin aspart versus insulin aspart in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes from Japan.

The aim of this post-hoc subgroup analysis, which was based on data from the treat-to-target, 26-week, onset 7 trial, was to confirm the efficacy and safety of fast-acting insulin aspart (faster aspart) versus insulin aspart (IAsp), both in combination with basal insulin degludec, in children and adolescents from Japan with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Of the onset 7 trial population (1 to <18 years; N = 777), 66 participants from Japan (65 Asian and one non-Asian) were randomized to mealtime faster aspart (n = 24), post-meal faster aspart (n = 19), or IAsp (n = 23). Data for the subgroup from Japan were analysed descriptively.
