Bioabsorbable sheet-shaped implants made of forged composites of unsintered hydroxyapatite and poly-L-lactide (F-u-HA/PLLA) have been used for orbital fracture repair with good results. This is the first report using multiple specimens implanted in the human orbit to demonstrate the biodegradation and loss of strength of F-u-HA/PLLA sheets. Among the patients who underwent various facial fracture repairs with F-u-HA/PLLA sheets implanted in their orbits, those whose sheets were subsequently extracted were included in the study.

A craniofacial penetrating injury can be severe when a foreign object reaches the skull base, causing an intracranial hemorrhage or a pseudoaneurysm. We report a case of sharp craniofacial injury in which a thin wooden rod moved from the orbit to the internal carotid artery. With a multidisciplinary team consisting of neurosurgeons, plastic surgeons, and otolaryngologists, the foreign body was safely removed, and the patient healed without complications or sequelae.

Article Synopsis
  • Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli are major causes of bacterial intestinal infections globally, while Campylobacter fetus can lead to extraintestinal infections, including those related to medical devices, like breast implants.
  • A case is presented involving a 64-year-old woman who developed a breast implant infection and vertebral osteomyelitis due to C. fetus, which required surgical intervention and a 6-week course of antibiotics for recovery.
  • After recovering, the patient experienced a subsequent infection in her other breast implant due to a quinolone-resistant strain of C. fetus, highlighting the potential for infections to spread to contralateral implants even after treatment.
