IgG4-Related Pericarditis Diagnosed by Accumulated Pericardial Effusion.

IgG4-related pericarditis has rarely been reported. Here, we report a case of IgG4-related disease that presented with pericardial effusion. A 67-year-old female who presented with palpitations and chest pain was admitted because of a large amount of pericardial effusion that required drainage.

Hepatic Stellate Cells Play a Functional Role in Exacerbating Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury in Rat Liver.

Purpose: The involvement of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) with ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury in rat liver was examined using gliotoxin, which is known to induce HSC apoptosis.

Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were used. HSC was represented by a glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)-positive cell.

Reconstructing Face Image from the Thermal Infrared Spectrum to the Visible Spectrum.

During the night or in poorly lit areas, thermal cameras are a better choice instead of normal cameras for security surveillance because they do not rely on illumination. A thermal camera is able to detect a person within its view, but identification from only thermal information is not an easy task. The purpose of this paper is to reconstruct the face image of a person from the thermal spectrum to the visible spectrum.

Effective use of gemcitabine in the treatment of undifferentiated carcinoma with osteoclast-like giant cells of the pancreas with portal vein tumor thrombus.

A 74-year-old woman had an undifferentiated carcinoma with osteoclast-like giant cells (UCWOGC) in the body of the pancreas with massive portal vein tumor thrombus (PVTT). Because the PVTT progressed so rapidly into the right portal branch, the patient first underwent distal pancreatectomy and tumor thrombectomy to prevent life-threatening portal venous obstruction. Although a recurrent PVTT had developed early postoperatively, systemic gemcitabine treatment was so effective that it induced complete remission 5 months after the initiation of chemotherapy.

Implication of protein kinase A for a hepato-protective mechanism of milrinone pretreatment.

Background: We have previously reported that an increase of adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) in liver tissue after an administration of milrinone, a phosphodiesterase-3 inhibitor attenuates hepatic warm ischemia-reperfusion injury. The aim of this study was to determine whether cAMP-dependent protein kinase (protein kinase A) activation was involved in the milrinone-induced hepatoprotective effect on an ischemia-reperfusion injury in an in vivo model.

Genome scan to detect genetic structure and adaptive genes of natural populations of Cryptomeria japonica.

We investigated 29 natural populations of Cryptomeria japonica using 148 cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence markers to elucidate their genetic structure and identify candidate adaptive genes of this species. In accordance with the inferred evolutionary history of the species during and after the last glacial episode, the genetic diversity was higher in western populations than in northern populations. The results of phylogenetic and genetic structure analyses suggest that populations of the two main varieties of the species have clearly diverged from each other and that two of the examined loci are strongly associated with the differentiation between the two varieties.

Microsatellite markers reveal high allelic variation in natural populations of Cryptomeria japonica near refugial areas of the last glacial period.

Using 11 microsatellite markers, we investigated the allelic variation and genetic structure of Cryptomeria japonica, across most of its natural distribution. The markers displayed high levels of polymorphism (average gene diversity=0.77, average number of alleles=24.

An ultrasonic motor driven by the phase-velocity difference between two traveling waves.

This paper presents a new ultrasonic motor in which the rotor rotation speed is locked by the phase-velocity difference between the two traveling waves propagating on the stator and the rotor. First, the unique construction to excite two traveling waves both in the stator and the rotor is described. Then, the operation principle of the present motor is revealed by our careful experiments.

Acute emphysematous cholecystitis preceded by symptoms of ileus: report of a case.

We herein describe a case of acute emphysematous cholecystitis in which the patient presented with symptoms of ileus. The patient was a 72-year-old man with no history of diabetes mellitus. He presented with epigastric pain, vomiting, and low-grade fever.
