Serving size may be the appropriate reference for calculating food nutritional value. We aimed to assess the nutritional values of Japanese foods based on serving sizes rather than per 100 g by adapting the Meiji Nutritional Profiling System (Meiji NPS). Given the variability in serving sizes across countries, we used Japanese serving sizes to calculate the Meiji NPS scores.

Utilities of whey powder (WP) and whey protein concentrate 34% powder (WPC34) prepared as dairy-processing residues were evaluated using a green alga . Analysis of growth showed that the strain used WP and WPC34 as nitrogen sources. Its specific growth rate and maximum cell density in WP-containing medium were higher than those in WPC34-containing medium; growth with WPC34 was improved by adding KCl or KHPO, which content was decreased as a result of WPC34's preparation from WP.

This study introduces the Meiji Nutritional Profiling System (Meiji NPS), which was specifically designed to respond to age-related shifts in nutrient requirements among Japanese adults (<65 years old) and older adults (≥65 years old). Japan has one of the most aged societies in the world. The health issues of interest are malnutrition and lifestyle-related diseases among adults and frailty among older adults.
