Bone repair and tissue-engineering (BTE) approaches require novel biomaterials to produce scaffolds with required structural and biological characteristics and enhanced performances with respect to those currently available. In this study, PCL/INU-PLA hybrid biomaterial was prepared by blending of the aliphatic polyester poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) with the amphiphilic graft copolymer Inulin-g-poly(D,L)lactide (INU-PLA) synthetized from biodegradable inulin (INU) and poly(lactic acid) (PLA). The hybrid material was suitable to be processed using fused filament fabrication 3D printing (FFF-3DP) technique rendering macroporous scaffolds.

Background: Short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache attacks with conjunctival injection and tearing (SUNCT) is a primary headache syndrome with an unclear pathogenesis, and only in very few cases, SUNCT is secondary to known lesions (secondary SUNCT). Several pharmacological as well as interventional and invasive treatments have been used to treat SUNT cases, with no definitive results. We describe a patient with idiopathic SUNCT syndrome, successfully treated with gamma knife radiosurgery and we report a review of the cases of the literature treated with radiosurgery.

Older patients are underrepresented in major cardiovascular trials, and only relatively healthy elderly patients, with few comorbidities or functional impairments, have been enrolled. As a result, current guidelines are unable to provide evidence-based recommendations for anesthesia treatment of patients aged ≥75 years, undergoing non-cardiac surgical procedures. Effective strategies, aimed at reducing the risk of perioperative cardiac complications, should involve cardiac evaluation using mostly medical history.

Background: The antimalarial drug Pyrimethamine has been suggested to exert an antitumor activity by inducing apoptotic cell death in cancer cells, including metastatic melanoma cells. However, the dose of Pyrimethamine to be considered as an anticancer agent appears to be significantly higher than the maximum dose used as an antiprotozoal drug.

Methods: Hence, a series of Pyrimethamine analogs has been synthesized and screened for their apoptosis induction in two cultured metastatic melanoma cell lines.

Apoptosis and autophagy are two evolutionary conserved processes that exert a critical role in the maintenance of tissue homeostasis. While apoptosis is a tightly regulated cell program implicated in the removal of damaged or unwanted cells, autophagy is a cellular catabolic pathway that is involved in the lysosomal degradation and recycling of proteins and organelles, and is thereby considered an important cytoprotection mechanism. Sphingolipids (SLs), which are ubiquitous membrane lipids in eukaryotes, participate in the generation of various membrane structures, including lipid rafts and caveolae, and contribute to a number of cellular functions such as cell proliferation, apoptosis and, as suggested more recently, autophagy.

Mitochondria have been considered for long time as important determinants of cell aging because of their role in the production of reactive oxygen species. In this study we investigated the impact of mitochondrial metabolism and biology as determinants of successful aging in primary cultures of fibroblasts isolated from the skin of long living individuals (LLI) (about 100 years old) compared with those from young (about 27 years old) and old (about 75 years old) subjects. We observed that fibroblasts from LLI displayed significantly lower complex I-driven ATP synthesis and higher production of H2O2 in comparison with old subjects.

We designed a Randomized Clinical Trial to test the hypothesis that inhalation anesthesia (sevoflurane/remifentanil--group S) reduces emergence time by 5 minutes compared with intravenous anesthesia (propofol/remifentanil--group P) in patients undergoing neurosurgery for supratentorial neoplasms.
