Background: EZH2 (enhancer of zeste homolog 2) is a histone H3K27 methyltransferase involved in the pathogenesis of various hematological malignancies. In myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), loss of function of EZH2 is known to contribute to pathogenesis, however the pattern of EZH2 mRNA and protein expression in MDS has not been extensively characterized.

Material And Methods: A total of 26 patients diagnosed with MDS were analyzed in this study.

Similarity of muscle synergies extracted from the lower limb including the deep muscles between level and uphill treadmill walking.

This study aimed to examine muscle synergies involving the deeper muscles of the lower limb during level and uphill treadmill walking. Seven men and five women walked on a treadmill at three speeds (60, 80, and 100m/min) and two grades (level and 10% grade). Surface electromyographic (EMG) signals were recorded from 10 muscles of the lower limb, including vastus intermedius, adductor magnus, and adductor longus.

In order to establish rapid and accurate typing method for Bacillus coagulans strains which is important for controlling in some canned foods and tea-based beverages manufacturing because of the high-heat resistance of the spores and high tolerance of the vegetative cells to catechins and chemicals, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and repetitive-PCR (rep-PCR) were evaluated. For this purpose, 28 strains of B. coagulans obtained from various culture collections were tested.

Little is known about how proprioceptive signals arising from muscles reach to higher brain regions such as the cerebral cortex. We have recently shown that a particular thalamic region, the caudo-ventromedial edge (VPMcvm) of ventral posteromedial thalamic nucleus (VPM), receives the proprioceptive signals from jaw-closing muscle spindles (JCMSs) in rats. In this study, we further addressed how the orofacial thalamic inputs from the JCMSs were transmitted from the thalamus (VPMcvm) to the cerebral cortex in rats.

A nationwide survey of hypoplastic myelodysplastic syndrome (a multicenter retrospective study).

Hypoplastic myelodysplastic syndrome (hMDS) is a distinct entity with bone marrow (BM) hypocellularity and the risk of death from BM failure (BMF). To elucidate the characteristics of hMDS, the data of 129 patients diagnosed between April 2003 and March 2012 were collected from 20 institutions and the central review team of the National Research Group on Idiopathic Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes, and compared with 115 non-hMDS patients. More RA and fewer CMMoL and RAEB-t in French-American-British (FAB) and more RCUD and MDS-U and fewer RCMD in World Health Organization (WHO) classifications were found in hMDS than non-hMDS with significant differences.

Green environment and incident depression in South Africa: a geospatial analysis and mental health implications in a resource-limited setting.

Background: Unprecedented levels of habitat transformation and rapid urbanisation are changing the way individuals interrelate with the natural environment in developing countries with high economic disparities. Although the potential benefit of green environments for mental health has been recognised, population-level evidence to this effect is scarce. We investigated the effect of green living environment in potentially countering incident depression in a nationally representative survey in South Africa.

ATP-dependent modulation of MgtE in Mg homeostasis.

Magnesium is an essential ion for numerous physiological processes. MgtE is a Mg selective channel involved in the maintenance of intracellular Mg homeostasis, whose gating is regulated by intracellular Mg levels. Here, we report that ATP binds to MgtE, regulating its Mg-dependent gating.

Genetic variation of root angle distribution in rice ( L.) seedlings.

We developed a new method of using seedling trays to evaluate root angle distribution in rice (. L), and found a wide genetic variation among cultivars. The seedling tray method can be used to evaluate in detail the growth angles of rice crown roots at the seedling stage by allocating nine scores (10° to 90°).

Lattice symmetries and the topologically protected transport of colloidal particles.

The topologically protected transport of colloidal particles on top of periodic magnetic patterns is studied experimentally, theoretically, and with computer simulations. To uncover the interplay between topology and symmetry we use patterns of all possible two dimensional magnetic point group symmetries with equal lengths lattice vectors. Transport of colloids is achieved by modulating the potential with external, homogeneous but time dependent magnetic fields.

Prediction of Hopeless Peptides Unlikely to be Selected for Targeted Proteome Analysis.

In targeted proteomics using liquid chromatography-tandem triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) in the selected reaction monitoring (SRM) mode, selecting the best observable or visible peptides is a key step in the development of SRM assay methods of target proteins. A direct comparison of signal intensities among all candidate peptides by brute-force LC/MS/MS analysis is a concrete approach for peptide selection. However, the analysis requires an SRM method with hundreds of transitions.

Relationship between HIV serostatus, CD4 count and rehospitalisation: Potential implications for health systems strengthening in South Africa.

Background: Despite three decades of scientific response to HIV/AIDS, the generalised HIV epidemic continues to persist in South Africa. There is growing acknowledgement that health system strengthening will be critical in tackling HIV/AIDS. Patient rehospitalisation is an important quality benchmark of health service delivery, but there is currently limited data on rehospitalisation of patients with HIV/AIDS in South Africa, a setting with a high burden of HIV disease.

In this study, we examined whether the distance to the primary healthcare clinic (PHCC) was associated with risk of depression in KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa. Depressive symptoms and household coordinates data were accessed from the nationally representative South African National Income Dynamics Study.

Social Disequilibrium and the Risk of HIV Acquisition: A Multilevel Study in Rural KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa.

Background: Few population-based multilevel studies have quantified the risks that social context poses in rural communities with high HIV incidence across South Africa. We investigated the individual, social, and community challenges to HIV acquisition risk in areas with high and low incidence of HIV infection (hotspots/coldspots).

Methods: The cohort (N = 17,376) included all HIV-negative adults enrolled in a population-based HIV surveillance study from 2004 to 2015 in a rural South African community with large labor migrancy.

Income inequality widens the existing income-related disparity in depression risk in post-apartheid South Africa: Evidence from a nationally representative panel study.

Aim: Income inequality (II) and poverty are major challenges in South Africa (SA) yet little is known about their interaction on population mental health. We explored relationships between district II, household income (HHI) and depressive symptoms in national panel data.

Method: We used 3 waves (2008, 2010, 2012) of the SA National Income Dynamics Study (n=25936) in adjusted mixed effects logistic regression to assess if the relationship between HHI and depressive symptoms is dependent on level of II.

Identification of a low tiller gene from a new plant type cultivar in rice ( L.).

We characterized a rice introgression line, YTH34, harboring a chromosome segment from a New Plant Type (NPT) cultivar, IR65600-87-2-2-3, in the genetic background of an Indica Group elite rice cultivar, IR 64, under upland and irrigated lowland conditions in Japan. The number of panicles (as an indicator of tiller number) and number of spikelets per panicle of YTH34 were lower than those of IR 64 under irrigated lowland conditions, but both of those as well as culm length, panicle length, seed fertility, panicle weight, whole plant weight, and harvest index were dramatically reduced under upland conditions. And the low tiller of YTH34 was confirmed to start after the maximum tiller stage.

Intensity fluctuation of a gain-switched semiconductor laser for quantum key distribution systems.

Security certification of quantum key distribution (QKD) systems under practical conditions is necessary for social deployment. This article focused on the transmitter, and, in particular, investigated the intensity fluctuation of the optical pulses emitted by a gain-switched semiconductor laser used in QKD systems implementing decoy-BB84 protocol. A large intensity fluctuation was observed for low excitation, showing strong negative correlation between the adjacent pulses, which would affect the final key rate.

Despite improved clinical outcomes of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, a certain proportion of patients still develop a primary refractory disease. To overcome these lymphomas that are intractable to existing treatment strategies, the tumor microenvironment has been identified as a potential therapeutic target. Here we describe our search for effective drugs for primary refractory lymphoma cells with MYC rearrangement.

The protein crystallography beamline BL2S1, constructed at one of the 5 T superconducting bending-magnet ports of the Aichi synchrotron, is available to users associated with academic and industrial organizations. The beamline is mainly intended for use in X-ray diffraction measurements of single-crystals of macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids. Diffraction measurements for crystals of other materials are also possible, such as inorganic and organic compounds.

Genetic and Epigenetic Modulation of CD20 Expression in B-Cell Malignancies: Molecular Mechanisms and Significance to Rituximab Resistance.

CD20 is a differentiation related cell surface phosphoprotein that is expressed during early pre-B cell stages until plasma cell differentiation, and is a suitable molecular target for B-cell malignancies by monoclonal antibodies such as rituximab, ofatumumab, obinutuzumab and others. CD20 expression is confirmed in most B-cell malignancies; however, the protein expression level varies in each patient, even in de novo tumors, and down-modulation of CD20 expression after chemoimmunotherapy with rituximab, resulting in rituximab resistance, has been recognized in the clinical setting. Recent reports suggest that genetic and epigenetic mechanisms are correlated with aberrantly low CD20 expression in de novo tumors and relapsed/refractory disease after using rituximab.

Lipoprotein profiling methodology based on determination of apolipoprotein concentration.

Aim: Abnormal lipid metabolism results in the alteration of lipid compositions in lipoproteins; therefore an accurate and quantitative analytical approach is required for the detailed structural characterization of lipoproteins. However, the specific lipid composition of each lipoprotein particle is poorly understood.

Materials & Methods: Lipid composition of very-low-density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein particles derived from myocardial infarction-prone rabbits was determined by normalization of lipidomics data using apoB-100 levels.

Objective: Little is known about the extent of mental, neurological and substance-use (MNS) disorders re-hospitalization in South Africa. We examined the extent of one-year MNS re-hospitalization (MNS-R) in a rural South African primary health care facility (PHCF).

Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of hospital administrative data from 10,525 adults discharged from a rural PHCF in KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa.
