Neutrophil to Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR)-A Useful Tool for the Prognosis of Sepsis in the ICU.

Sepsis is a life-threatening medical emergency induced by the body's extreme response to an infection. Despite well-defined and constantly updated criteria for diagnosing sepsis, it is still underdiagnosed worldwide. Among various markers studied over time, the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) recently emerged as a good marker to predict sepsis severity.

The role of androgen receptors in vascular and cell proliferation of the prostate adenocarcinomas.

Prostate adenocarcinoma (PA) is by incidence and prognosis a unique model for investigating the biomolecular mechanisms involved in tumor progression. In this study, we analyzed the immunoexpression of androgen receptor (AR), cluster of differentiation 105 (CD105) and Ki67 for 61 cases of PA, in relation to the main clinicopathological parameters of the lesions. The AR scores, CD105 microvessel density (MVD) and Ki67 proliferation index (PI) were significantly higher in patients with serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) above 20 ng∕mL, in ductal, colloid and sarcomatoid types of PA, in growth patterns 4-5 or mixed, respectively in the case of high-grade advanced stage tumors, with perineural and vascular invasion, as well as in groups with a reserved prognosis.

Analysis of Prostate Adenocarcinoma Histopathological Types in Relation to Tumor Grade.

Prostate adenocarcinomas are some of the most common malignancies diagnosed in men, and the evaluation of tumor growth patterns is the basis for establishing the aggressiveness of the lesions. The study included 283 cases of prostate adenocarcinomas for which histopathological type and tumor grade were analyzed. The results indicated the association of ductal, sarcomatoid and signet ring-like cell types with aggressive growth patterns and high scores, atrophic and pseudohyperplastic types with mild growth patterns and low scores, foamy gland type presented intermediate growth patterns/scores, while conventional and colloid types had variable aspects.

Management of a Patient with Tuberous Sclerosis with Urological Clinical Manifestations.

The tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is highly variable as far as its clinical presentation is concerned. For the implementation of appropriate medical surveillance and treatment, an accurate diagnosis is compulsory. TSC may affect the heart, skin, kidneys, central nervous system (epileptic seizures and nodular intracranial tumors-tubers), bones, eyes, lungs, blood vessels and the gastrointestinal tract.

Urinary Bladder Tumors Clinical and Statistical Retrospective Study.

The impact of liver steatosis on early and sustained treatment response in chronic hepatitis C patients.

Steatosis is a frequent feature of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Steatosis may be an important cofactor in both accelerating fibrosis and increasing liver necroinflammatory activity in chronic hepatitis C. The main objective of this study was the evaluation of biological response rates, early viral response, sustained viral response in patients with chronic hepatitis C treated with Interferon-alpha (IFN-α), Pegylated (PEG)-IFN-α2a or -α2b plus Ribavirin and to relate it to the presence of hepatic steatosis.

The Importance of the Correlation between the Ultrasonographic Evaluation of Endometrium and Histopathological Findings in Patients with Endometrial Hyperplasia and Carcinoma.

The cadherin switch assessment in the epithelial-mesenchymal transition of urothelial bladder carcinomas.

Introduction: The epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) process is a complex molecular mechanism that is involved in the acquisition of an aggressive, invasive and metastatic phenotype by carcinomas. The cadherin switch consists in the alteration of E-cadherin and N-cadherin expression and is specific for the EMT process.

Materials And Methods: This study included 35 cases of primitive urothelial carcinomas investigated in relation with clinicopathological prognostic parameters and expression of E- and N-cadherins in the advancing edge and intratumoral compartments.

Paratesticular liposarcoma of the spermatic cord: a case report and review of the literature.

Spermatic cord liposarcoma is a rare medical condition and liposarcomas are most commonly found in the retroperitoneum, in the extremities and less often in the head and the neck area. The spermatic cord is a rare site of origin, accounting for about 3-7% of all liposarcomas. We report a case of liposarcoma of spermatic cord.

Adjuvant Treatment of Intermediate Risk Non-muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer.

Despite continuous improvement of diagnosis, surgical and adjuvant treatment procedures for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), their natural development is still influenced by the high rates of tumor recurrence and progression. The study aims at assessing the value of adjuvant intravesical chemotherapy within the therapeutic protocol for operated intermediate risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancers. We analyzed recurrence and progression rates for patients within two samples: group A included 76 patients with intermediate risk NMIBC treated by transurethral resection (TUR) alone between 1995 and 1999 and group B included 89 patients with the same diagnosis with 8 - 12 Farmorubicin 50 mg intravesical instillations associated with the initial TUR between 2000 and 2004.

Assessment of Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) Therapeutic Efficiency in Urolithiasis.

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) revolutionized the treatment of urolithiasis and gradually became the favorite treatment option so that today it is considered to be the first line of treatment for more than 75% of the patients with urolithiasis. The purpose of this study was the assessment of the therapeutic efficiency, complications and limitations of ESWL in urolithiasis in the initial experience using a third generation electromagnetic lithotripter.  Between 2007 and 2008 we performed ESWL for 167 patients with urolithiasis.

Morphological experimental study of bone stress at the interface acetabular bone/prosthetic cup in the bipolar hip prosthesis.

By calculating the tension and distortion of the elements composing the bipolar prosthesis under extreme conditions encountered in real life using a special post-processing program, we established the variation curves of the contact pressure at the hip bone-cup, armor-cup and cup-femoral head interface. By comparing the data obtained from all the examined cases, important conclusions were drawn regarding the influence of tension and pressure distribution on the structural integrity and biomechanics of the prosthesis, as well as the acetabular wear and tear, in order to assess its reliability. The experimentally determined tension and distortion status at the acetabular bone-metal armour interface, lead to the wear and tear phenomenon, which can be explained by three mechanisms and theories incompletely reflecting the overall process.

[Crohn's disease. Clinical and therapeutical considerations].

Crohn's disease is a chronic granulomatous inflammatory condition of the intestinal tract of unknown etiology. Most commonly the disease affects the small bowel, the colon and the rectum. The acute and aggressive forms can evolve fast, mimicking an acute surgical illness, requiring surgical intervention in emergency.

Comparative study between prostatic carcinoma G1-G3 and Gleason grading systems.

The need of an accurate and prognostically valuable method for grading the prostatic carcinoma resulted in, in the last decades, a large number of systems, none of them succeeding in being unanimously accepted by the pathologists family. The authors selected and reassessed using Gleason system a group of 221 cases with prostatic adenocarcinoma previously diagnosed using a combined G1-G3 system. The results were converted from Gleason system to G1-G3 system and then compared with the initial diagnostics.

Assessment of Gleason system use on different types of prostatic tissue samples.

One of the well-known and accepted methods of prostatic adenocarcinoma grading is Gleason system. The authors made a retrospective analysis of 221 prostatic adenocarcinomas divided into three groups (transvesical prostatectomies, transurethral resections and needle biopsies) following the type of surgical procedure used for drawing the tissue. Gleason scores and comparison between odd and even Gleason scores were assessed in the entire group and in each subgroup.

[The megaureter--a possible complication after resected retroperitoneal tumor].

The authors present a very rare complication of a retroperitoneal tumor resection: unilateral iliopelvic segmental megaureter. This condition was subsequently complicated with a diffuse peritonitis caused by parietal microperforations.

[Cases of serous otitis admitted to the ENT Department of the V. Babeş Hospital over the last 7 years].

A total number of 283 patients with serious otitis were admitted during the latter 7 years. In more than 98% of cases the auditory function was integrally recovered to values prior to the disease following the treatment of tubal dysfunction and serious otitis.
