Objective: Thymidine-dependent small-colony variants (TD-SCVs) of Staphylococcus aureus are being isolated with increasing frequency from patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between TD-SCV isolation and pulmonary function in patients with CF, as well as to determine whether the emergence of TD-SCVs was associated with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) use and with coinfection with other microorganisms.

Methods: This was a retrospective case-control study including patients with CF who visited the Clinical Hospital Complex of the Federal University of Paraná, in Curitiba, Brazil, between 2013 and 2022.

The Diósi-Penrose model states that the wave function collapse ending a quantum superposition occurs due to the instability of coexisting gravitational potentials created by distinct geometric conformations of the system in different states. The Heisenberg time-energy principle can be invoked to estimate the collapse time for the energy associated with this instability, the gravitational self-energy. This paper develops atomistic models to calculate the Diósi-Penrose collapse time.

A family of ten novel ruthenium(II)-cyclopentadienyl organometallics of general formula [Ru(η-CH)(N,N)(PPh(CHCOOR)][CFSO] (1-10) in which (N,N) = 4,4'-R'-2,2'-bipyridyl (R = -H or -CHCHOH; R' = -H, -CH, -OCH, -CHOH, and -CH-biotin) was prepared from [Ru(η-CH)(PPh(CHCOOH))Cl]. All compounds were fully characterized by means of several spectroscopic and analytical techniques, and the molecular structures of [Ru(η-CH)(PPh(CHCOOH))Cl], 1, 3 and 4 have been additionally studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The anticancer activity of all compounds was evaluated in sensitive and multidrug-resistant counterpart cell lines from human colorectal cancer (Colo 205 and Colo 320) and non-small cell lung cancer NSCLC (A549, NCI-H460 versus NCI-H460/R) as well.

The search for more effective and selective drugs to overcome cancer multidrug resistance is urgent. As such, a new series of ruthenium-cyclopentadienyl ("RuCp") compounds with the general formula [Ru(η-CHR)(4,4'-R'-2,2'-bipy)(PPh)] were prepared and fully characterized. All compounds were evaluated toward non-small cell lung cancer cells with different degrees of cisplatin sensitivity (A549, NCI-H2228, Calu-3, and NCI-H1975), showing better cytotoxicity than the first-line chemotherapeutic drug cisplatin.

Indigo Blue (IB) is a dye widely used by the textile sector for dyeing cellulose cotton fibers and jeans, being considered a recalcitrant substance, and therefore resistant to traditional treatments. Several methodologies are reported in the literature for the removal or degradation of dyes from the aqueous medium, among which photoelectrocatalysis stands out, which presents promising results in the degradation of dyes when a dimensionally stable anode (DSA) is used as a photoanode. With the aim to incorporate pharmacophore motifs into the Ru(II)-polypyridyl framework, compounds [Ru(II)(1,10-phenantroline)(2-(2-pyridyl)benzo[b]thiophene)](CFSO) (1) and [Ru(II)(1,10-phenantroline)(2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole)](CFSO) (2) were prepared, characterized and tested for their antitumor potential. The solid-state structure of the compounds was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The solution behavior of both complexes was investigated, namely their solubility, stability, and lipophilicity in physiological mimetic conditions, as well as an eventual uptake by passive diffusion.

We report the synthesis, characterization and biological effect of mixed-ligand Fe(III)-aminophenolate complexes derived from salicylaldehyde and L-tryptophan with quinoline derivatives as co-ligands, namely 8-hydroxyquinoline (8HQ), [Fe(L)(8HQ)(HO)] (1) and its 5-cloro derivative (Cl8HQ), [Fe(L)(Cl8HQ)(HO)] (2). Grammatical gender retrieval during language production has been largely addressed through the picture-word interference (PWI) paradigm, with the aim of capturing the so-called gender congruency effect (GCE). In the PWI paradigm, participants name target pictures while ignoring superimposed written distractor nouns. The GCE shows faster responses when target and distractor nouns share the same gender than when gender differs.
