Black carrot pomace (BCP) is a by-product of colorant production, containing various valuable components with the health promoting effects. In this study, for the first time, BCP was incorporated into a starch-based extruded snack formulation using wheat semolina and corn starch. Total phenolic content, total antioxidant capacity, phenolics, and anthocyanins after processing and in vitro gastrointestinal digestion were investigated, and physical and textural properties of the snack products were determined.

Mitomycin C as an Anti-Persister Strategy against Toxicity and Synergy Studies.

The combination of several therapeutic strategies is often seen as a good way to decrease resistance rates, since bacteria can more easily overcome single-drug treatments than multi-drug ones. This strategy is especially attractive when several targets and subpopulations are affected, as it is the case of persister cells, a subpopulation of bacteria able to transiently survive antibiotic exposures. This work aims to evaluate the potential of a repurposed anticancer drug, mitomycin C, combined with the lytic phage vB_KpnM-VAC13 in vitro and its safety in an in vivo murine model against two clinical isolates of this pathogen, one of them exhibiting an imipenem-persister phenotype.

Evidence suggests that physical exercise induces a cascade of cellular processes that favours brain plasticity. The Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) is a neurotrophin closely linked to neuroplasticity that can be increased due to exercise.

Simultaneous clonal spread of NDM-1-producing ST773 from Ukrainian patients in the Netherlands and Spain.

Objectives: We describe the clonal spread of New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase (NDM) 1-producing isolates belonging to the ST773 clone in Spain and the Netherlands, associated with the transfer of Ukrainian patients during the war.

Methods: Between March and December 2022, nine NDM-1-producing ST773 isolates were recovered from nine Ukrainian patients evacuated to two Spanish ( = 3) and five Dutch ( = 6) hospitals. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was studied (Sensititre, Microscan, EUCAST-2023).

Prolonged opioid use after single-level lumbar spinal fusion surgery in a Belgian population: a multicentric observational study.

Purpose: Lumbar spinal fusion surgeries are increasingly being performed in spinal degenerative disease, often accompanied by perioperative opioid prescriptions. The aim of this study is to analyze prolonged postoperative opioid use following a standardized opioid prescription after single-level lumbar spinal fusion surgery in a Belgian population.

Methods: This prospective, multicentric observational study included patients undergoing single-level lumbar fusion surgery for degenerative disease.

Background: Protein kinase A (PKA) enhances neurotransmission at the neuromuscular junction (NMJ), which is retrogradely regulated by nerve-induced muscle contraction to promote Acetylcholine (ACh) release through the phosphorylation of molecules involved in synaptic vesicle exocytosis (SNAP-25 and Synapsin-1). However, the molecular mechanism of the retrograde regulation of PKA subunits and its targets by BDNF/TrkB pathway and muscarinic signalling has not been demonstrated until now. At the NMJ, retrograde control is mainly associated with BDNF/TrkB signalling as muscle contraction enhances BDNF levels and controls specific kinases involved in the neurotransmission.

Background: Multidrug-resistant bacteria and the shortage of new antibiotics constitute a serious health problem. This problem has led to increased interest in the use of bacteriophages, which have great potential as antimicrobial agents but also carry the risk of inducing resistance. The objective of the present study was to minimize the development of phage resistance in strains by inhibiting quorum sensing (QS) and thus demonstrate the role of QS in regulating defense mechanisms.

New variants expand the neurological phenotype of COQ7 deficiency.

The protein encoded by COQ7 is required for CoQ synthesis in humans, hydroxylating 3-demethoxyubiquinol (DMQ) in the second to last steps of the pathway. COQ7 mutations lead to a primary CoQ deficiency syndrome associated with a pleiotropic neurological disorder. This study shows the clinical, physiological, and molecular characterization of four new cases of CoQ primary deficiency caused by five mutations in COQ7, three of which have not yet been described, inducing mitochondrial dysfunction in all patients.

Manifestations and Treatment of Hypovitaminosis in Oral Diseases: A Systematic Review.

This review's objective is to examine the findings from various studies on oral signs and symptoms related to vitamin deficiency. In October 2023, two electronic databases (Scopus and PubMed) were searched for published scientific articles following PRISMA principles. Articles eligible for inclusion in this review had to be published in English between 2017 and 2023, be original studies, and involve human subjects.

During the development of the nervous system, there is an overproduction of neurons and synapses. Hebbian competition between neighboring nerve endings and synapses performing different activity levels leads to their elimination or strengthening. We have extensively studied the involvement of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor-Tropomyosin-related kinase B receptor neurotrophic retrograde pathway, at the neuromuscular junction, in the axonal development and synapse elimination process versus the synapse consolidation.

Exploring the bioaccessibility of polyphenols and glucosinolates from Brassicaceae microgreens by combining metabolomics profiling and computational chemometrics.

Microgreens constitute natural-based foods with health-promoting properties mediated by the accumulation of glucosinolates (GLs) and phenolic compounds (PCs), although their bioaccessibility may limit their nutritional potential. This work subjected eight Brassicaceae microgreens to in vitro gastrointestinal digestion and large intestine fermentation before the metabolomics profiling of PCs and GLs. The application of multivariate statistics effectively discriminated among species and their interaction with in vitro digestion phases.

Are shortened aPTT values always to be attributed only to preanalytical problems?

Objectives: It has been recognized that shortened activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) may be caused by various preanalytical conditions. As coagulation Factor VIII is included in the intrinsic coagulation cascade measured by aPTT, we hypothesized that the shortened aPTT could be a result of elevated FVIII activity. We aimed to inspect the connection of elevated FVIII with shortened aPTT, and the possible effect inflammation has on routine laboratory parameters.

The role of viral diagnostic tests in respiratory tract infections: moving forward.

The increased knowledge on virology and the increased potential of their diagnostic has risen several relevant question about the role of an early viral diagnosis and potential early treatment on the management of respiratory tract infections (RTI). In order to further understand the role of viral diagnostic tests in the management of RTI, a panel of experts was convened to discuss about their potential role, beyond what had been agreed in Influenza. The objective of this panel was to define the plausible role of aetiologic viral diagnostic into clinical management; make recommendations on the potential expanded use of such tests in the future and define some gaps in the management of RTI.

Recent progress in promoting the bioavailability of polyphenols in plant-based foods.

Polyphenols are important constituents of plant-based foods, exhibiting a range of beneficial effects. However, many phenolic compounds have low bioavailability because of their low water solubility, chemical instability, food matrix effects, and interactions with other nutrients. This article reviews various methods of improving the bioavailability of polyphenols in plant-based foods, including fermentation, natural deep eutectic solvents, encapsulation technologies, co-crystallization and amorphous solid dispersion systems, and exosome complexes.

Determination of the Prevalence of Microsatellite Instability, and / Mutation Status in Patients with Colorectal Cancer in Slovakia.

Slovakia has one of the highest rates of colorectal cancer among the developed countries, ranking as the second highest in the incidence of this disease for men worldwide. Despite the significant burden on both quality of life and the healthcare system this disease imposes, data on molecular analysis of biomarkers in CRC-diagnosed patients is scarce. In our study, we analyzed confirmed CRC patients from the database of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and evaluated the presence of 4 biomarkers in tumor tissues.

Two lymphoma histotypes and papillary thyroid carcinoma coexisting on Hashimoto ground: a case report and review of the literature.

Background: Papillary carcinoma is the most frequent type of thyroid carcinoma, while primary thyroid lymphoma is uncommon disease. The coexistence of these entities has already been described, and the common risk factor is considered Hashimoto thyroiditis. The two most frequent histotypes of primary thyroid lymphoma are diffuse large B-cell and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, but the coexistence of both with papillary carcinoma is rarely reported.

Assessing the performance of Bing Chat artificial intelligence: Dental exams, clinical guidelines, and patients' frequent questions.

Objectives: Bing Chat is a large language model artificial intelligence (AI) with online search and text generating capabilities. This study assessed its performance within the scope of dentistry in: (a) tackling exam questions for dental students, (ii) providing guidelines for dental practitioners, and (iii) answering patients' frequently asked questions. We discuss the potential of clinical tutoring, common patient communication and impact on academia.
