Reversed-phase thin-layer chromatography and reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography were used for lipophilicity determination of a library of 30 thiazole chalcones and aurones previously synthetized in our laboratory. The experimental lipophilicity data have been compared with theoretical lipophilicity parameters estimated by various computational methods. Good correlations between the experimental and calculated lipophilicity parameters have been found for both investigated classes of compounds.

Two chitosan extracts were prepared by chemical and enzymatic treatment of Ganoderma lucidum mushroom, as an alternative source to crustacean shells. The molecular weight of the enzymatic extract was lower than that of the chemical one and of shrimp chitosan, as determined by viscosity measurements. Characteristic signals were identified in the H-NMR spectra and high deacetylation degree indicated good physico-chemical properties for both mushroom chitosan extracts.

Background: Other than the programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) value, oncologists have only the clinical characteristics of patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (aNSCLC) to determine candidates for immunotherapy. A clinical prognostic score composed of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status, sex, histologic type, stage, platinum-based first-line therapy, and response to first-line therapy has categorized 3 prognostic groups for patients undergoing second-line chemotherapy. We sought to validate the same score for patients with aNSCLC treated with second- or further-line immunotherapy.

Background: The standard treatment for symptomatic Chiari malformation (CM) I is foramen magnum decompression (FMD) to facilitate cerebral spinal fluid flow through the foramen magnum, improve intracranial compliance, and alleviate symptoms (commonly headache). This procedure has a variable success rate, with a significant proportion of patients having persistent symptoms after surgery.

Objective: To investigate intracranial pressure (ICP) hydrodynamics in symptomatic surgery-naïve patients with CM I and symptomatic patients who have had prior FMD.

Background: Concomitant left main coronary artery (LMCA) disease in patients with chronic total occlusions (CTO) commonly results in referral for coronary artery bypass grafting, although the impact of LMCA in CTO patients remains largely unknown. Nevertheless, patient selection for percutaneous coronary intervention of CTOs (CTO-PCI) or alternative revascularization strategies should be based on precise evaluation of the coronary anatomy to anticipate those patients that most likely benefit from a procedure and not on strict adherence to perpetual clinical practice. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the impact of LMCA disease on long-term outcomes in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention for CTO.

Background: The percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for chronic total occlusions (CTO) remains debated. Therefore the aim of this large-scale observational multi-center registry was to compare the long-term outcome of CTO patients undergoing different therapeutic approaches comparing successful CTO revascularization either by PCI or coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), failed CTO-PCI and optimal medical therapy (OMT) alone.

Methods And Results: A total of 6630 CTO patients were enrolled from two high-volume centers to compare different treatment strategies.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) can elicit toxicities by inhibiting negative regulators of adaptive immunity. Sometimes, management of toxicities may require systemic glucocorticoids. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies to evaluate the correlation between steroids use, overall survival (OS), and progression-free survival (PFS) in cancer patients treated with ICIs.

Background: In this real-world multicenter study we addressed the activity of post-progression anticancer treatments after first-line pembrolizumab in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with PD-L1 ≥50%.

Methods: Clinico-pathological data of PD-L1 ≥50% advanced NSCLCs who failed first-line pembrolizumab were collected in 14 Oncologic Centers from different European countries. Types of subsequent anticancer treatment and outcomes on salvage chemotherapy or pembrolizumab beyond progression with or without the addition of local ablative therapies were reported.

The research aims to identify the respiratory pathology during the first two years of life in premature infants with gestational ages between 30-34 weeks and the risk factors for these conditions (familial, prenatal, and neonatal). There were investigated 31 premature infants with gestational ages between 30-34 weeks and the incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia, infections with the respiratory syncytial virus, or other viral infections requiring hospitalization, recurrent wheezing, and nasal colonization with pathogenic bacteria were noted. Also, regression models for each type of respiratory pathology as a function of the antenatal (smoking in the family, atopy, mother's age) and neonatal (gestational age, respiratory distress syndrome, duration of the treatment with antibiotics, use of the reserve antibiotics) factors were elaborated.

The influence of spore concentration on the ability of a consortium to colonize the phyllosphere was evaluated by determining the effects of foliar treatments with two spore concentrations, in two repeated treatments, on the morphological, physiological, and ultrastructural characteristics, and on the yield and quality of . The studied crop quality features were related to its nutraceutical use: the accumulation of polyphenols and flavonoids, antioxidant activity, and effects on mouse fibroblast L929 cells. The consortium consisted of two strains, T36b and Td50b, and the concentrations used were 10 colony forming units (cfu)/mL and 10 cfu/mL.

: Distal symmetrical polyneuropathy (DSPN) is one of the most common chronic complications of diabetes mellitus. Although it is usually characterized by progressive sensory loss, some patients may develop chronic pain. Assessment of DSPN is not difficult, but the biggest challenge is making the correct diagnosis and choosing the right treatment.

Background: Headache is the symptom of pain in the face, head or neck that causes disability in most people with medical and neurological disorders. It frequently co-occurs with most chronic diseases such as epilepsy and significantly impacts the quality of life. However, epidemiologic data from different studies showed different rates of prevalence.

Antiplatelet therapy with P2Y receptor inhibitors (clopidogrel, prasugrel, ticagrelor, cangrelor) is a cornerstone of medical therapy after percutaneous coronary interventions. Significant prevalence of high on-treatment platelet reactivity (HTPR) on clopidogrel treatment led to introduction of more potent P2Y inhibitors: prasugrel (a third generation thienopyridine), ticagrelor, and cangrelor (cyclopentyl-triazolo-pyrimidines). Nevertheless, more potent platelet inhibition and resulting low on-treatment platelet reactivity (LTPR) has led to increased risk of major bleeding events.

Background: Slit ventricles can be a challenging target during shunt catheter insertion. Traditionally, the frontal approach has been considered optimal for small ventricles. At this center, routine use of electromagnetic (EM) stereotactic guidance (Stealth, Medtronic, Dublin, Ireland) has enabled a parietooccipital (P-O) burr hole approach to the frontal horns.

Percutaneous coronary interventions with stent-based restorations of vessel patency have become the gold standard in the treatment of acute coronary states. Bioresorbable vascular scaffolds (BVS) have been designed to combine the efficiency of drug-eluting stents (DES) at the time of implantation and the advantages of a lack of foreign body afterwards. Complete resolution of the scaffold was intended to enable the restoration of vasomotor function and reduce the risk of device thrombosis.

Background: Beyond programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1), no other biomarkers for immunotherapy are used in daily practice. We previously created EPSILoN (Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (ECOG PS), smoking, liver metastases, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR)) score, a clinical/biochemical prognostic score, in 154 patients treated with second/further-line immunotherapy. This study's aim was to validate EPSILoN score in a different population group.

The optimal management of patients with ventriculoperitoneal or lumboperitoneal shunts undergoing abdominal or pelvic surgery for unrelated reasons is often unclear due to the paucity of guidelines in this field. In this review, we outline key issues in managing these patients. Specifically, we address issues relating to pre-operative planning, avoidance of shunt-related complications such as infection and malfunction, and specific management of neurological symptoms in the post-operative period.
