Background: An anomalous left vertebral artery (aLVA) can complicate aortic arch surgery. We examined the safety of various aLVA revascularization strategies during open total arch replacement.

Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 92 patients undergoing total arch replacement from January 2018 to May 2023 and identified 11 patients with aLVA.

Article Synopsis
  • A new color-based, semi-automatic algorithm was developed to detect, isolate, and quantify myocardial infarction in cardiac tissues using four histological staining methods.
  • The algorithm identifies differences in color between infarct and non-infarct regions, demonstrating effectiveness with staining techniques like Masson's trichrome and hematoxylin and eosin.
  • It shows promise for accurately quantifying both infarct regions and diffuse fibrosis in cardiac tissues, enhancing evaluation of therapeutic strategies for heart diseases.

Precise quantification of myocardial infarction is crucial for evaluating the therapeutic strategies. We developed a robust, color-based semi-automatic algorithm capable of infarct region detection, isolation and quantification with four different histological staining techniques, and the isolation and quantification of diffuse fibrosis in the heart. Our method is developed based on the color difference in the infarct and non-infarct regions after histological staining.

Background: The management of aortic stenosis has evolved to stratification by age as reflected in recent societal guidelines. We evaluated age-stratified surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) trends and outcomes in patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) or tricuspid aortic valve (TAV) from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Adult Cardiac Surgery Database.

Methods: This cohort included adults (≥18 years) undergoing SAVR for severe aortic stenosis between July 2011 and December 2022.

Objective: HAART 300 300 (BioStable Science and Engineering, Inc) aortic annuloplasty rings restore physiologic annular geometry during aortic valve repair. Transcatheter valve-in-ring implantation is appealing for recurrent valve dysfunction but may necessitate balloon fracture of downsized annuloplasty rings. We characterized the feasibility of ring fracture and changes in ring geometry preceding fracture.

Article Synopsis
  • Severe pulmonary hypertension (PH) is linked to poorer outcomes in cardiac surgery, particularly impacting patients undergoing elective isolated aortic valve replacement (AVR).
  • The study analyzed data from 206 patients, identifying that while severe PH worsens postoperative results, the degree of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) alone does not.
  • Patients with combined pre- and post-capillary PH (cpcPH) faced more complications, while those with isolated post-capillary PH (ipcPH) showed higher mortality rates over one and three years, suggesting hemodynamic stratification could enhance risk assessment in these surgeries.
