Background: This study aimed to describe the clinical outcomes of total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation (TP-IAT) in Australia.

Methods: Individuals selected for TP-IAT surgery according to the Minnesota Criteria (Appendix) without evidence of diabetes were evaluated including time to transplantation from pancreatectomy, islet numbers infused and post-transplantation HbA1c, C-peptide, total daily insulin and analgesic requirement.

Results: Sixteen individuals underwent TP-IAT from Australia and New Zealand between 2010 and 2020.

Aims/hypothesis: Beta cell replacement is a potential cure for type 1 diabetes. In humans, islet transplants are currently infused into the liver via the portal vein, although this site has disadvantages. Here, we investigated alternative transplantation sites for human and murine islets in recipient mice, comparing the portal vein with quadriceps muscle and kidney, liver and spleen capsules.

A label-free porous silicon (pSi) based, optical biosensor, using both an antibody and aptamer bioreceptor motif has been developed for the detection of insulin. Two parallel biosensors were designed and optimised independently, based on each bioreceptor. Both bioreceptors were covalently attached to a thermally hydrosilylated pSi surface though amide coupling, with unreacted surface area rendered stable and low fouling by incorporation of PEG moieties.

Objective: To describe trends of primary efficacy and safety outcomes of islet transplantation in type 1 diabetes recipients with severe hypoglycemia from the Collaborative Islet Transplant Registry (CITR) from 1999 to 2010.

Research Design And Methods: A total of 677 islet transplant-alone or islet-after-kidney recipients with type 1 diabetes in the CITR were analyzed for five primary efficacy outcomes and overall safety to identify any differences by early (1999-2002), mid (2003-2006), or recent (2007-2010) transplant era based on annual follow-up to 5 years.

In the context of islet transplantation, experimental models show that induction of islet intrinsic NF-κB-dependent proinflammatory genes can contribute to islet graft rejection. Isolation of human islets triggers activation of the NF-κB and mitogen-activated kinase (MAPK) stress response pathways. However, the downstream NF-κB target genes induced in human islets during the isolation process are poorly described.

To identify the physiological role of Hck, a functionally redundant member of the Src family of tyrosine kinases expressed in myelomonocytic cells, we generated Hck(F/F) "knock-in" mice which carry a targeted tyrosine (Y) to phenylalanine (F) substitution of the COOH-terminal, negative regulatory Y(499)-residue in the Hck protein. Unlike their Hck(-/-) "loss-of-function" counterparts, Hck(F/F) "gain-of-function" mice spontaneously acquired a lung pathology characterized by extensive eosinophilic and mononuclear cell infiltration within the lung parenchyma, alveolar airspaces, and around blood vessels, as well as marked epithelial mucus metaplasia in conducting airways. Lungs from Hck(F/F) mice showed areas of mild emphysema and pulmonary fibrosis, which together with inflammation resulted in altered lung function and respiratory distress in aging mice.

The overall goal of this study was to determine the effects of subchronic nicotine (0.4 mg/kg) treatment for 7 or 14 days on striatal glutamate function in both naïve and in 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-treated rats in which the nigrostriatal dopamine pathway was lesioned. In lesioned animals, the effect of nicotine on apomorphine-induced contralateral rotations was also assessed.
