Genotype-by-environment interaction (GEI) is among the greatest challenges for maize breeding programs. Strong GEI limits both the prediction of genotype performance across variable environmental conditions and the identification of genomic regions associated with grain yield. Remote sensing enables the rapid assessment of many traits that provide valuable information to plant breeders throughout the growing season to improve genetic gain. As the plant variety protection (PVP) of commercial inbred lines expire, public breeding programs gain a wealth of genetic materials that have undergone many years of intense selection; however, the value of these inbred lines is only fully realized when they have been well characterized and are used in hybrid combinations. Additionally, while yield is the primary trait by which hybrids are evaluated, new phenotyping technologies, such as ear photometry (EP), may provide an assessment of yield components that can be scaled to breeding programs. This article presents a method of simulating molecular transport in capillary gas chromatography (GC) applicable to isothermal, temperature-programmed, and thermal gradient conditions. The approach accounts for parameter differences that can occur across an analyte band including pressure, mobile phase velocity, temperature, and retention factor. The model was validated experimentally using a GC column comprised of microchannels in a stainless-steel plate capable of isothermal, temperature-programmed, and thermal gradient GC separations.

This paper examines the separation effects of a moving thermal gradient on a chromatographic column in gas chromatography. This movement of the gradient has a focusing effect on the analyte bands, limiting band broadening in the column. The device, called the halo ion trap, consists of two parallel ceramic plates, the facing surfaces of which are imprinted with sets of concentric ring electrodes. This study was conducted to examine the potential influence of salinity, a proxy for freshwater inflow, on the prevalence of the castrator parasite Loxothylacus panopaei on saltmarsh mud crabs Panopeus obesus on SW Florida oyster reefs. Spatial and seasonal patterns of the presence of potential host crabs and the prevalence of the parasite were assessed in the Caloosahatchee, Estero, and Faka Union estuaries. A miniature ion trap mass analyzer is reported. The described analyzer is a 1/5-scale version of a previously reported toroidal radio frequency (rf) ion trap mass analyzer. Surrogate end point biomarkers for risk assessment and efficacy of potential chemopreventive agents are needed to improve the efficiency and reduce the cost of chemoprevention trials. It is imperative to develop the best clinical breast model for translational surrogate end point biomarker studies, especially with respect to accrual feasibility. We have initiated a prospective study to develop biomarkers for tamoxifen and N-[4-hydroxyphenyl] retinamide by administering either a placebo or both drugs for 2-4 weeks to women with ductal carcinoma in situ or early invasive cancers in the interval between the initial diagnostic core biopsy and definitive surgery.

Background: The goal of this study was to examine the role of ultrasonography in detecting axillary lymph node metastases in stage II breast cancer patients after induction chemotherapy (IC).

Methods: Of 172 consecutive patients with T1-3, N0-1, M0 breast cancer registered in a prospective IC trial, a subset of 130 evaluable patients were chosen, with (1) both physical and ultrasonographic examinations of the axilla before and after IC; (2) exactly four cycles of IC; (3) no presurgical radiation therapy; and (4) an axillary lymph node dissection.

Results: Before IC, 32 patients (25%) were negative for axillary involvement by both physical and ultrasonographic examinations.
