Predicting the mortality risk of patients with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) can be valuable in allocating limited medical resources in the setting of outbreaks. This study assessed the role of a chest X-ray (CXR) scoring system in a multivariable model in predicting the mortality of COVID-19 patients by performing a single-center, retrospective, observational study including consecutive patients admitted with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 and an initial CXR. The CXR severity score was calculated by three radiologists with 12 to 15 years of experience in thoracic imaging, based on the extent of lung involvement and density of lung opacities.

Recognition of the human stress-induced ligand MHC class I polypeptide-related sequence A (MICA) by the receptor NKG2D expressed on NK cells leads to NK cell-mediated killing of the target cells. Hence, the expression of MICA must be tightly regulated, and its cell surface expression needs to be quickly downregulated to avoid inappropriate activation of immune cells. A distinct odd-even effect on the electrical properties, induced by monolayers of alkyl-phenyl molecules directly bound to Si(111), is reported. Monomers of H2C═CH-(CH2)n-phenyl, with n = 2-5, were adsorbed onto Si-H and formed high-quality monolayers with a binding density of 50-60% Si(111) surface atoms. Molecular dynamics simulations suggest that the binding proximity is close enough to allow efficient π-π interactions and therefore distinctly different packing and ring orientations for monomers with odd or even numbers of methylenes in their alkyl spacers.

Cherubism is a benign fibro-osseous disease of childhood limited specifically to the maxilla and mandible. The progressive replacement of the jaw bones with expansile multilocular cystic lesions causes eventual prominence of the lower face, and hence the classic "cherubic" phenotype reflecting variable extents of jaw hypertrophy. Histologically, this condition has been characterized as replacement of the normal bone matrix with multicystic pockets of fibrous stroma and osteoclastic giant cells.

One of the most important roles of magnetic resonance (MR) in imaging of the diabetic foot is to differentiate between the common and often comorbid pathologies that present with abnormal bone marrow signal. The primary diagnostic challenges in this setting are to distinguish osteomyelitis from reactive bone marrow edema, neuroarthropathy from osteomyelitis, and the sterile from the superinfected neuropathic joint. Whereas both osteomyelitis and reactive marrow edema share increased T2 signal, osteomyelitis is confirmed by T1 hypointensity in the bone marrow and reactive edema demonstrates isolated T2 signal hyperintensity.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), a heritable disease caused by molecular defects in type I collagen, is characterized by skeletal deformities and brittle bones. The heterozygous and homozygous oim mice (oim/+ and oim/oim) exhibit mild and severe OI phenotypes, respectively, serving as controlled animal models of this disease. In the current study, bone geometry, mechanics, and material properties of 1-year-old mice were evaluated to determine factors that influence the severity of phenotype in OI.

The homozygous oim/oim mouse, a model of moderate-to-severe human osteogenesis imperfecta, contains a G-nucleotide deletion in the Cola-2 gene (the murine pro alpha(I) collagen gene) that results in accumulation of alpha1(I) homotrimer collagen. Although these mice have a distinctive phenotype that includes multiple fractures and deformities, genotyping is necessary to distinguish them from their wildtype (+/+) and heterozygote (oim/+) littermates. The purpose of this study was to assess the biological and behavioural characteristics associated with the variation in the awake-sleep blood pressure (BP) difference in a large series of patients who had ambulatory BP monitoring. The 1186 subjects in the study (689 men and 497 women) each wore an ambulatory BP monitor over one 24 h period. All patients had been off antihypertensive medication for at least 3 weeks prior to the BP monitoring.
