Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) is a major method for investigation of electronic structure and dynamics, with applications ranging from basic atomic physics to materials science. In RIXS applied to inversion-symmetric systems, it has generally been accepted that strict parity selectivity applies in the sub-kilo-electron volt region. In contrast, we show that the parity selection rule is violated in the RIXS spectra of the free homonuclear diatomic O molecule.

To shed a light on this problem, we report the theoretical reproduction of the debated 1b_{1} peaks observed in the XES spectra of liquid water using semiclassical Kramers-Heisenberg formula. The essence of the temperature and isotope dependence of the 1b_{1} double peaks is explained by molecular dynamics simulations including full vibrational (O─H stretching, bending, and) modes, rotational combined with the density functional theory and core-hole induced dynamics.

Therefore, the present study aimed to characterize cardiac- and respiratory-driven CSF motions in the intracranial space using delay time, CSF velocity waveform correlation, and displacement.
Methods: Asynchronous two-dimensional phase-contrast at 3T was applied to measure the CSF velocity in the inferior-superior direction in a sagittal slice at the midline (N = 12) and an axial slice at the foramen magnum (N = 8).
The valence electronic structures of the amino acid glycine in aqueous solution were investigated in detail through X-ray emission spectroscopy at O 1s excitation under selective excitation conditions of the C[double bond, length as m-dash]O site in the carboxyl group. The X-ray emission spectra of glycine were similar to that of acetic acid (CH3COOH), suggesting a resemblance between the molecular orbitals associated with the carboxyl groups in the two molecules. The changes of O 1s X-ray emission spectra as a function of pH were investigated in detail.

In the usual electrochemical measurement setup, the electrode is placed in solution, and the surface/interface region of the electrode is not normally accessible by soft X-rays that have low penetration depth in liquids. View Article and Find Full Text PDFHigh-resolution O 1s resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra of liquid H2O, D2O, and HDO, obtained by excitation near the preedge resonance show, in the elastic line region, well-separated multiple vibrational structures corresponding to the internal OH stretch vibration in the ground state of water. The energy of the first-order vibrational excitation is strongly blueshifted with respect to the main band in the infrared or Raman spectra of water, indicating that water molecules with a highly weakened or broken donating hydrogen bond are correlated with the preedge structure in the x-ray absorption spectrum. The vibrational profile of preedge excited HDO water is well fitted with 50%±20% greater OH-stretch contribution compared to OD, which strongly supports a preference for OH being the weakened or broken H-bond in agreement with the well-known picture that D2O makes stronger H-bonds than H2O.

In contrast to predictions based on a narrow range of local water structures where the two peaks would be of different molecular orbital symmetry and arise from, respectively, intact and dissociated molecules, we show that the two peaks in the lone-pair region are both of lone-pair 1b(1) orbital symmetry. The results support the interpretation that the two peaks appear due to fluctuations between two distinct different main structural environments.

Purpose: To clarify the prognostic factors for recently revised stage IB non-small cell lung cancer.
Methods: Twenty-six specimens of completely resected stage IB (pT2aN0M0) non-small cell lung cancer were studied. Clinicopathological profiles of the 26 patients, including age, sex, smoking status, tumor size, histology, pleural invasion, and lymphatic and blood vessel invasion, were assessed.
Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the appropriate condition of use of the fibrin glue plus polyglycolic acid (PGA) sheet combination to obtain the optimal sealing effect.
Methods: 126 consecutive patients underwent video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) were divided into groups as follows: fibrin glue sprayed on the PGA sheet placed over the pleural defect (Method I); fibrinogen and thrombin solutions sprayed separately on the PGA sheet soaked in thrombin and placed over the pleural defect after rubbing of fibrinogen solution on the area (Method II); fibrin glue sprayed on the PGA sheet placed over the pleural defect after rubbing of fibrinogen solution on the area (Method III). Method II and Method III were also examined in an animal model.

A new type of collector optics was developed for grazing incident x-ray emission spectrometer. The collector optics used two cylindrical mirrors to add two extra light paths while keeping the center light path that directly illuminates the grating. The design and properties of the spectrometer using the triple-path collector optics were evaluated using ray-tracing simulations, and validity of this design in terms of throughput and energy resolution was confirmed by the experimentally obtained spectra.
