Introduction: Stigma toward epilepsy is widespread not only among the general population but also among healthcare professionals. Therefore, the necessity of providing educational opportunities for epilepsy from an early stage in student education has been emphasized. Recently, problem-based learning (PBL) has gained importance in higher education, with reports indicating that it not only enhances knowledge but also reduces stigma.

Objective: Identification of seizure focus on the interhemispheric fissure (IHF) is often challenging at the step of scalp video-EEG monitoring on preoperative evaluations. We previously reported ictal three-phase EEG patterns (3Ph-EEG) and isolated eye deviation (isolated ED) to side of the seizure focus during seizures, each of which is available for identifying the seizure focus for frontal IHF (F-IHF). This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of predicting the F-IHF focus using a combination of 3Ph-EEG and isolated ED in patients with frontal lobe epilepsy and the accuracy of predicting lateralization of the F-IHF focus using the predominance of findings.

The relationship between maternal prenatal psychological distress and epilepsy development in offspring has not yet been clarified. Herein, we used a dataset obtained from the Japan Environment and Children's Study, a nationwide birth cohort study, to evaluate the association between six-item Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K6) scores and epilepsy among 1-3 years old. The data of 97,484 children were retrospectively analyzed.

Objective: This study aims to delineate the electrophysiological variances between patients with infantile epileptic spasms syndrome (IESS) and healthy controls and to devise a predictive model for long-term seizure outcomes.

Methods: The cohort consisted of 30 individuals in the seizure-free group, 23 in the seizure-residual group, and 20 in the control group. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of pretreatment electroencephalography, including the relative power spectrum (rPS), weighted phase-lag index (wPLI), and network metrics.

This study aimed to determine whether more stable electroretinography parameters could be obtained in younger children using skin electrodes placed at the inner canthus and ears compared to using contact lens electrodes. The study included three Japanese patients (two girls and one boy) who presented with epileptic spasms before the age of 3 years. We compared the electroretinography parameters obtained with skin electrodes and contact lens electrodes.

Article Synopsis
  • ASXL3-related disorder is a genetic condition that leads to developmental delays and limited speech, first identified in 2013, and follows an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern.
  • A 14-year-old girl with the disorder presented with emotional instability and a significant decrease in food intake, resulting in weight loss, with no signs of bulimia or food allergies.
  • This case marks the first adolescent instance of feeding difficulties linked to ASXL3-related disorder, suggesting avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) as a possible contributing factor.

Article Synopsis
  • The study discusses three patients with early onset epileptic spasms who did not show hypsarrhythmia on EEG results and had other types of seizures.
  • These patients, who were between 1 and 3 months old, showed no abnormalities on neurometabolic tests or brain imaging, but long-term monitoring revealed varying seizure patterns.
  • All three patients achieved seizure freedom through treatment primarily with topiramate, suggesting this medication could be a viable option for managing early onset epileptic spasms without hypsarrhythmia.

Article Synopsis
  • A study evaluated the effect of levodopa on gait disturbances in individuals with Dravet syndrome (DS), using a three-dimensional gait analysis (3DGA) in a crossover design with nine participants aged 6-20 years.
  • The results showed significant improvements in gait metrics, including a 4.2-point increase in the Gait Deviation Index (GDI), a 52-meter improvement in the 6-minute walking distance, and enhanced balance.
  • The findings suggest that levodopa may effectively improve gait disturbances in younger individuals with better initial gait performance, with no serious side effects noted, except for one case of fever.

Tolvaptan, a vasopressin receptor antagonist, has been shown to be effective in the treatment of renal cysts in ADPKD. However, tolvaptan is not indicated for pediatric patients, and reports of its use are rare, making its efficacy and adverse reactions unclear. Herein, we present the case of an 11-year-old girl who had vitiligo from birth.

Status epilepticus (SE) often causes neuronal death in the cerebrum and consequent long-term sequelae. Acute encephalopathy with biphasic seizures and late reduced diffusion is clinically characterized by SE associated with fever and seizure clusters that occur 3-9 days after symptom onset. MRI reveals reduced diffusion in the frontal or frontoparietal subcortical white matter, with sparing of the perirolandic region following seizure clusters.
