A novel method for measuring radon in water is proposed. This method involves sampling radon from water into sunflower oil and subsequently measuring the radon in the oil using either Cherenkov counting or Liquid Scintillation (LS) counting. The high partition coefficient of radon between oil and water enables radon preconcentration in the oil, significantly improving the Minimum Detectable Activity Concentration (MDAC) compared to direct Cherenkov or LS measurements in water.

The femoral artery (FA) is the largest vessel in the hindlimb circulation and its proper tone regulation ensures adequate blood supply to muscle tissue. We investigated whether an alanine mutation of the targeting subunit of myosin-light-chain-phosphatase (MLCP), MYPT1, at threonine 696 (MYPT1-T696A/+), decisive for enzyme acivity, affects the responsiveness of young and old FAs (y-FAs and o-FAs) to activation of nitric-oxide/soluble-guanylate-cyclase/protein-kinase-G cascade (NO/sGC/PKG). A major shortcoming in the treatment of mesangial cell-associated diseases such as IgA nephropathy, diabetic nephropathy, or lupus nephritis, which frequently progress to end-stage renal disease, is poor drug availability in the glomerular mesangium. Drug delivery active targeting of nanoparticles, using ligands attached to the particle surface for target cell recognition to increase the biodistribution to the mesangium, is a promising strategy to overcome this hurdle. However, although several glomerular tissue targeting approaches have been described, so far no study has demonstrated the particles' ability to deliver sufficient drug amounts combined with an appropriate nanoparticle target retention time to trigger relevant biological effects in the mesangium.

In the Triple to Double Coincidence Ratio method in Liquid Scintillation Counting, the detection efficiency is calculated from the value of a free parameter describing the intrinsic light yield of the counting system. This model is generally based on a Poisson distribution of the number of photoelectrons detected and the detection efficiency is obtained from the complement of the non-detection efficiency. In the classical free parameter model, the mean of the Poisson distribution, m, is a constant but some variability of this mean could be expected from optical effects due to internal reflections inside the LS source or from non-homogeneity of the detection efficiency of the photomultiplier tubes.

Elevated plasma concentrations of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) are associated with an increased risk of mortality and adverse cardiovascular outcomes. ADMA can be metabolized by dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolases (DDAHs) and by alanine-glyoxylate aminotransferase 2 (AGXT2). Deletion of DDAH1 in mice leads to elevation of ADMA in plasma and increase in blood pressure, while overexpression of human DDAH1 is associated with a lower plasma ADMA concentration and protective cardiovascular effects.

The causative role of inflammation in hypertension-related cardiovascular diseases is evident and calls for development of specific immunomodulatory therapies. We tested the therapeutic efficacy and mechanisms of action of developmental endothelial locus-1 (DEL-1), an endogenous antiinflammatory factor, in angiotensin II- (ANGII-) and deoxycorticosterone acetate-salt-induced (DOCA-salt-induced) cardiovascular organ damage and hypertension. By using mice with endothelial overexpression of DEL-1 (EC-Del1 mice) and performing preventive and interventional studies by injecting recombinant DEL-1 in mice, we showed that DEL-1 improved endothelial function and abrogated aortic adventitial fibrosis, medial thickening, and loss of elastin.

Activation of the hypoxia-signalling pathway induced by deletion of the ubiquitin-ligase von Hippel-Lindau protein causes an endocrine shift of renin-producing cells to erythropoietin (EPO)-expressing cells. Several lines of evidence support the existence of a renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in the retina that is separated from the blood stream by the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Under physiological conditions, increased activity of intraretinal RAS regulates neuronal activity of the retina but patho-physiologically participates in retinal degeneration such as hypertensive or diabetic retinopathy. Interestingly, the RPE appears to be a modulator of intraretinal RAS in response to changes in systemic RAS.
