Study Objectives: 1) To determine the efficacy of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) for improving insomnia, alcohol-related outcomes, and daytime functioning at post-treatment and at 3- and 6-month follow-up, in a largely African American Veteran sample; 2) Evaluate whether improvement in insomnia is associated with a reduction in alcohol-related outcomes post-treatment.
Methods: An RCT of CBT-I (n = 31) compared to Quasi-Desensitization therapy (QDT, n = 32), eight weekly in-person sessions, with assessments at baseline, end of treatment (8 weeks), and 3- and 6-months post-treatment. Primary outcomes were the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) total score, and Percent Days Abstinent (PDA).
Study Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to preliminarily evaluate whether knowing the dim light melatonin onset (DLMO) time is advantageous when treating delayed sleep-wake phase disorder with low-dose melatonin treatment plus behavioral interventions (ie, evening dim light and time in bed scheduling).
Methods: In this randomized, controlled, double-blind trial, 40 adults with delayed sleep-wake phase disorder were randomly assigned to 4 weeks of 0.5 mg timed to be administered either 3 hours before the DLMO (measured DLMO group, n = 20) or 5 hours before sleep-onset time per actigraphy (estimated DLMO group, n = 20), in conjunction with behavioral interventions.
Importance: Three of 4 adults in treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD) report symptoms of insomnia. Yet the first-line treatment for insomnia (cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, CBT-I) is often delayed until abstinence is established.
Objective: To test the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of CBT-I among veterans early in their AUD treatment and to examine improvement in insomnia as a mechanism for improvement in alcohol use outcomes.
Background: Individuals with regular cannabis use demonstrate adverse health outcomes, yet infrequently seek treatment. Insomnia, a common co-occurring complaint, could be targeted to reduce cannabis use and improve functioning in these individuals. Underlying Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) serves as a potential candidate to explain this effect due to its downstream effects on inflammatory activation and decreased nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability, both of which have been shown to contribute to the pathophysiology of both MDD and cardiovascular disease (CVD).
Methods: This study utilizes overnight polysomnography and an inflammation panel to examine the links between cardiovascular dysfunction and sleep difficulties in control participants and patients diagnosed with SDB only, MDD only, and both SDB and MDD.
Introduction: As many as 74% of veterans with alcohol use disorders (AUDS) report symptoms of insomnia. Insomnia represents a barrier to alcohol treatment because insomnia symptoms (1) may lead to relapse among those who use alcohol to help them sleep and may negatively impact (2) executive functions and (3) emotion regulation skills. Methods: The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) commissioned a task force of experts in sleep medicine and sleep psychology to develop recommendations and assign strengths based on a systematic review of the literature and an assessment of the evidence using Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) methodology. The task force evaluated a summary of the relevant literature and the quality of evidence, the balance of clinically relevant benefits and harms, patient values and preferences, and resource use considerations that underpin the recommendations.

Procedures: Adults ages 21 and older (N=801,M age=45.8) who were seeking medical cannabis certification (either for the first time or as a renewal) for chronic pain at medical cannabis clinics in southern Michigan completed baseline measures of cannabis use, sleep, pain, and other related constructs.
Background: Little is known about motives for cannabis use among the population of adults using cannabis medically. Therefore, we evaluated the performance of the 12 factor, 36-item Comprehensive Marijuana Motives Questionnaire (CMMQ) among a sample of medical cannabis patients.
