Ecological studies are aligned along a realism-precision continuum ranging from field observations to controlled lab experiments that each have their own strengths and limitations. Ecological insight may be most robust when combining approaches. In field observations along a successional gradient, we found correlations between plant species composition and soil bacterial communities, while bacterial Shannon diversity was unrelated to vegetation characteristics.

We present a wafer-level vacuum-packaged (WLVP) translatory micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) actuator developed for a compact near-infrared-Fourier transform spectrometer (NIR-FTS) with 800-2500 nm spectral bandwidth and signal-nose-ratio (SNR) > 1000 in the smaller bandwidth range (1200-2500 nm) for 1 s measuring time. Although monolithic, highly miniaturized MEMS NIR-FTSs exist today, we follow a classical optical FT instrumentation using a resonant MEMS mirror of 5 mm diameter with precise out-of-plane translatory oscillation for optical path-length modulation. Compared to highly miniaturized MEMS NIR-FTS, the present concept features higher optical throughput and resolution, as well as mechanical robustness and insensitivity to vibration and mechanical shock, compared to conventional FTS mirror drives.

The accuracy of 16-row multidetector CT in the visualization of different peripheral artery stents and in the appraisal of in-stent stenosis was assessed. Nine different stent types (nitinol and stainless steel) with three diameters (6, 8 and 10 mm) were used; altogether 27 stents were analyzed in a barrel-shaped vascular model. Low-grade (<40%) and high-grade (>60%) in-stent stenoses were simulated by polyurethane sticks (70 HU) of differing diameters (2-6 mm).
