Background: Plasma osteopontin (pOPN) is a promising aging-related biomarker among individuals with and without kidney disease. The interaction between sex, pOPN levels, and global and cardiorenal outcomes among older individuals was not previously evaluated.

Methods: In this study we investigated the association of pOPN with 24-month global mortality, major cardiovascular events (MACEs), MACEs + cardiovascular (CV) mortality, and renal decline among older individuals; we also evaluated whether sex modified observed associations.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the relationship between omega-3 PUFAs and stroke risk across 29 global cohorts, focusing on total, ischemic, and hemorrhagic strokes.
  • Results showed that higher levels of eicosapentaenoic acid reduced the incidence of total and ischemic strokes by 17% and 18%, respectively, while docosahexaenoic acid also lowered these risks by 12% and 14%.
  • The findings indicate that although higher omega-3 PUFA levels are linked to reduced total and ischemic stroke risks, there is no effect on hemorrhagic strokes.

Background: The relationship between omega-3 fatty acids and atrial fibrillation (AF) remains controversial.

Objectives: This study aimed to determine the prospective associations of blood or adipose tissue levels of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) with incident AF.

Methods: We used participant-level data from a global consortium of 17 prospective cohort studies, each with baseline data on blood or adipose tissue omega-3 fatty acid levels and AF outcomes.

Osteopontin is a member of the proinflammatory cytokine network, a complex system that involves many chemokines, cytokines, and growth factors. The aim of the present study was to study the associations between osteopontin and a large number of chemokines, cytokines, and growth factors. We analyzed plasma and urine osteopontin in 652 men from the Uppsala Longitudinal Study of Adult Men (ULSAM) study cohort and compared the levels with the levels of eighty-five chemokines, cytokines, and growth factors.

Neuropeptide S (NPS) receptor (NPSR1) polymorphisms are associated with enteral dysmotility and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This study investigated the role of NPS in conjunction with nitrergic mechanisms in the regulation of intestinal motility and mucosal permeability. In rats, small intestinal myoelectric activity and luminal pressure changes in small intestine and colon, along with duodenal permeability, were studied.

YF476 differs from the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) esomeprazole in mode of action by antagonizing the type 2 receptor of cholecystokinin/gastrin (CCK-2R). YF476 protection against diclofenac-induced gastric ulcers was compared to esomeprazole and correlated with plasma levels of hormones related to gastric pH (gastrin, ghrelin, and somatostatin), gastric gene expression of these hormones, their receptors, and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). YF476 or esomeprazole pretreatments were followed by diclofenac.
