The effective use of energy from sustainable sources is considered a crucial step on the way to a CO-neutral economy. Low-grade waste heat (<100 °C) is widely and ubiquitously available, but difficult to convert into electrical energy with current technologies. Here, we demonstrate an electrochemical cell capable of directly converting ambient temperature fluctuations into electricity.

Article Synopsis
  • Tin and tin oxides are potential candidates for anodes in lithium-ion batteries, thanks to their high theoretical capacity and low cost, but they face commercialization challenges primarily due to issues with significant volume expansion during use.
  • Nanostructured electrodes help with the volume expansion problem but usually come with complex synthesis processes that hinder scalability and cost-effectiveness.
  • The proposed solution involves a simple and scalable method using electroplating and electrolytic oxidation of tin, which creates additive-free tin oxide anodes that demonstrate excellent capacity and cycle life, making them suitable for future high-energy lithium-ion batteries.
