Comparative analyses of the N-glycosylation pattern of hemolymph glycoproteins from Biomphalaria glabrata strains Puerto Rico (BgPR) and Salvador (BgBS-90), differing in their susceptibility towards Schistosoma mansoni infection, were performed by Western blotting, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, two-dimensional high-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Obtained data demonstrated an enhanced expression of serologically cross-reacting, fucosylated carbohydrate epitopes by the highly susceptible BgPR-strain in comparison to the resistant BgBS-90-strain. In particular, glycoproteins of BgPR snails exhibited larger amounts of glycans with (β1-2)-linked xylose or terminal Fuc(α1-3)GalNAc(β1-4)[±Fuc(α1-3)]GlcNAc(β1-)-units which are known to mediate cross-reactivity with schistosomal glycoconjugates.

The human parasitic trematode Schistosoma mansoni has a complex life cycle that includes the freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata as intermediate host. Within each stage, the parasite synthesizes a wide array of glycoconjugates, exhibiting, in part, unique carbohydrate structures. In addition, the parasite expresses definitive host-like sugar epitopes, such as Lewis X determinants, supporting the concept of carbohydrate-mediated molecular mimicry as an invasion and survival strategy.

In pharmacological bioassays on isolated ring-shaped auricle preparations of Sepia officinalis, the action of the specific 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) agonists 8-OH-DPAT (5-HT1a), CP-93129 (5-HT1b), TFMPP (5-HT1b) and RS-67333 (5-HT4) on these autonomously contractile compartments was studied. 8-OH-DPAT and CP-93129 induced mainly positive effects on frequency and tone on the isotonically suspended auricles. The positive effect of 8-OH-DPAT on frequency was blocked by the specific 5-HT1a antagonist NAN-190.

In pharmacological bioassays on isolated isotonically suspended auricles of Sepia officinalis, the regulatory action of the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) on these autonomous contractile compartments was demonstrated. 5-HT induced concentration-dependent positive effects on frequency and tone, whereas the concentrations/response curve for the amplitude showed a biphasic course. All applied antagonists inhibited mainly the effect of 5-HT on frequency and amplitude.
