Response of Biomass Development, Essential Oil, and Composition of Plectranthus amboinicus (Lour.) Spreng. to Irrigation Frequency and Harvest Time.

A greenhouse experiment was conducted to study the effects of four irrigation intervals (4, 8, 12, and 16 days) and six harvests (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 months after transplanting) on biomass, essential oil content, and composition of Plectranthus amboinicus (Lour.) Spreng. Fresh weight and essential oil yield decreased with increasing irrigation interval; whereas, essential oil content was stimulated by water stress and increased as the irrigation interval increased.

A Case of Autoimmune Polyglandular Syndrome .ype 2 Associated with Atypical Form of Scleromyxedema.

Background: Autoimmune polyglandular syndrome type 2 represents an uncommon endocrine disorder composed by Addison's disease with autoimmune thyroid disease (Schmidt's syndrome) and/or type 1 diabetes mellitus. Scleromyxedema is a rare progressive cutaneous mucinosis usually associated with systemic involvement and paraproteinemia. To the best of our knowledge, there is no case report of Schmidt's syndrome associated with scleromyxedema.

Dongsha Atoll: A potential thermal refuge for reef-building corals in the South China Sea.

Dongsha Atoll (also known as the Pratas Islands), the northernmost atoll in the South China Sea, experiences two contrasting physical phenomena: repetitive anomalies of the sea surface temperature exceeding the coral bleaching threshold and regular effects of the world's strongest internal waves resulting in the rhythmic upwelling of cold deep waters at the outer reef slopes of the atoll. This unique combination may result in significant differences in coral species composition and structure between the lagoon and forereef. Surveys conducted in August-September 2016 at 12 study sites in the 2-15 m depth range at Dongsha Atoll revealed a clear spatial separation between 'thermally-susceptible' stony coral genera, including Acropora, Pocillopora and Montipora, which mainly inhabited the forereef, and 'thermally-resistant' genera, including massive Porites, foliaceous Echinopora, Pavona and Turbinaria, which mainly resided in the lagoon.

Complex Identifcation of Red Yeast Isolate from Gastrointestinal Tract of Hucul Long-Liver (Carpathians, Ukraine).

The red yeasts are currently widely discussed and controversial group of yeasts because of the growing number of reports of their ability to become opportunistic pathogens of plants, animals and humans. The aim of this work was complex identifcation of the red yeast culture isolated from gastrointestinal tract of healthy Hucul long-liver from the Carpathians highland region of Ukraine. Torularhodin was found to be a major component within yeast culture carotenoids complex.

ETHANOL PRODUCTION FROM STARCH BY YEASTS ISOLATED FROM CROPS AND DAIRY PRODUCTS.

The aim of this work was to study the ability ofyeasts isolated from crops and dairy products to convert starch to ethanol. The isolated yeasts were screened for their ability to hydrolyze starch. Six most active strains were identified as Lipomyces mesembrius spp.

Among 52 tested yeast isolates 14 % yeasts showed considerable antagonistic activity towards Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and only 6 % of them inhibited growth of Gram negative bacteria belonging to genera Escherichia and Citrobacter Most ofyeasts with antagonistic activity (over 70 %) were isolatedfriom long-livers GIT There were identifed two optimal for antagonism areas of pH values of nutrient medium for tested yeasts being around 5.5 and 6.

[Coral reefs in the face of ecological threats of XXI century].

To date, more than a quarter of tropical coral reefs of the World Ocean are believed to be totally de- stroyed. Given the present rates of reefs degradation, this value may be doubled in the nearest 30 years. For the essential part of coastal community, the destruction of coral ecosystems implies the loss of the major food sources, natural protection from storms, and significant (if not the only) revenue from exploi- tation of reefs especially in tourism industry.

The northernmost coral frontier of the Maldives: The coral reefs of Ihavandippolu Atoll under long-term environmental change.

[Effect of a lesion of the hypothalamic nuclei on the morphofunctional state of the hypothalamo-hypophyseal system and the development of experimental atherosclerosis].

Injury of individual nuclei of the anterior and the middle portions of the hypothalamus in rabbits by electrocoagulation through the preliminarily implanted electrodes was accompanied by the change in the morpho-functional condition of the hypothalamo-hypophysial neurosecretory system (HHNS). The nearer the focus of injury to the region of the supraoptic nuclei -- the greater the functional activity of the HHNS. In combining the injuries of individual hypothalamic nuclei with the atherogenic diet there occurred marked morpho-functional changes both in the HHNS and in the adrenal glands; as to animals with experimental atherosclerosis, it acquired under these conditions a more severe form than in the animals on the atherogenic diet alone.
