Gastrointestinal (GI) malignancies are notorious for frequently progressing to advanced stages even in the absence of serious symptoms, thus leading to delayed diagnoses and dismal prognoses. Secondary prevention of GI malignancies through early detection and treatment of cancer-precursor/premalignant lesions, therefore, is recognized as an effective cancer prevention strategy. In order to efficiently detect these lesions, systemic application of screening tests (surveillance) is needed.

Three-dimensional time-dependent quantum mechanical method has been used to study the influence of orientation, rotation, and vibration on the dissociation of water molecule on Cu(111) surface, using London-Eyring-Polanyi-Sato potential energy surface. Our calculations show that dependency of dissociation probability on the initial orientation of the molecule changes with the vibrational state of the molecule. It has also been found that for v(0) = 0 and 1, where v(0) stands for the vibrational state of the pseudo diatomic HO-H, the rotational excitation of the molecule increases the reactivity, whereas for v(0) = 2, the rotational excitation of the molecule decreases the reactivity.

The absorption and fluorescence spectra of the 7-diethylamino-4-methyl coumarin (DAMC) in ethanol-water (1:9 v/v) solution at varying pH values were investigated. The interaction between DAMC and bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy. We have exploited the fully time-dependent Born-Oppenheimer approximation to develop time-dependent potential energy surfaces for the lowest two states of H(2)(+) in the presence of intense, time-varying, few-cycle laser fields of 2-8 fs duration. Quantum dynamics are explored on these field-dressed, time-dependent potentials. Our results show that the potential well in the lowest-energy state of H(2)(+) (i) collapses as the laser pulse reaches its peak amplitude and (ii) regains its form on the trailing edge of the pulse, and (iii) the trapped nuclear wavepacket has a higher probability of leaking out from the well in the case of longer laser pulses.

Oligodendrocyte genes and white matter tracts have been implicated in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia and may play an important etiopathogenic role in cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia. The objective of the present study in 60 chronic schizophrenia patients individually matched to 60 healthy controls was to determine whether 1) white matter tract integrity influences cognitive performance, 2) oligodendrocyte gene variants influence white matter tract integrity and cognitive performance, and 3) effects of oligodendrocyte gene variants on cognitive performance are mediated via white matter tract integrity. We used the partial least-squares multivariate approach to ascertain relationships among oligodendrocyte gene variants, integrity of cortico-cortical and subcortico-cortical white matter tracts, and cognitive performance.

New compounds with hydrophyllic esters of (-)-carinol were synthesized and evaluated as xanthine oxidase enzyme inhibitors and antioxidants. Aliphatic esterfication of C-9,9'-OH groups of (-)-carinol resulted in lowering antioxidant and xanthine oxidase inhibitory activities. OSI-930, a dual c-Kit and KDR tyrosine kinase inhibitor, is reported to have undergone a Phase I dose escalation study in patients with advanced solid tumors. A series of fifteen pyridyl and phenyl analogues of OSI-930 were designed and synthesized. Extensive screening of these compounds led to the discovery that nitropyridyl and ortho-nitrophenyl analogues, VKJP1 and VKJP3, were effective in reversing ABC subfamily G member 2 (ABCG2) transporter-mediated multidrug resistance (MDR).

Background: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has extensive effects on the nervous system including cell survival, differentiation, neuronal growth and maintenance, as well as cell death. Moreover, it promotes synaptic plasticity and interacts with dopaminergic and serotonergic neurons, suggesting an important role on the alteration of brain function with antipsychotic medications and induced weight gain in schizophrenia patients. The differential effects of BDNF gene variants could lead to changes in brain circuitry that would in turn cause variable response to antipsychotic medication.
