Article Synopsis
  • Optimal transcorneal penetration is crucial for effective ocular therapy, but traditional preservatives like benzalkonium-chloride are toxic and irritating to corneal cells, necessitating the development of safer alternatives.
  • This study developed prednisolone-containing eye drops using a cyclodextrin complex for better drug permeability, combined with a zinc-based biopolymer as a non-toxic preservative.
  • Results indicated that the new formulations were less harmful to corneal cells compared to those containing benzalkonium-chloride, and suggested that these innovative eye drops could allow for prolonged absorption and less frequent administration.

Purpose: The formulation of topical ophthalmic products with appropriate therapeutic effect and patient compliance is a major challenge. To increase the efficiency of the ocular delivery of the drug, the enhancement of water solubility and the contact time of the drug on the surface of the cornea are necessary. In this work, prednisolone (PR)-containing eye drops were formulated with antimicrobial, mucoadhesive biopolymer and PR-cyclodextrin inclusion complex.
