The Policy of Compulsory Large-Scale Food Fortification in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Food fortification with micronutrients was initially justified in developed countries by a lack of availability of micronutrients in staple crops, mainly due to soil exhaustion. However, in Sub-Saharan arable lands, soil fatigue is not predominant, and communities consume mostly home-grown, organic, non-processed crops. Sub-Saharan food systems are nevertheless deeply entwined with food insecurity, driver of illnesses.

Treatment of Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaws without Segmental Resections: A Case Series.

BACKGROUND Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a rare but serious reaction to anti-resorptive drugs (ARDs) in patients treated for osteoporosis and conditions related to cancer. Treatment for MRONJ consists of the use of non-operative therapies according to the evolution of the disease, which consist of the use of antimicrobial mouthwashes, systemic antibiotics, and operative therapies, such as debridement of necrotic bone, marginal or segmental resection, and bone reconstruction of the jaws in more advanced stages of the disease. CASE REPORT This is a case series of 11 female patients treated for MRONJ, with a mean age of 76.

In recent decades, the global demographic landscape has undergone a discernible shift that has been characterised by a progressive increase in the proportion of elderly individuals, indicative of an enduring global inclination toward extended lifespans. The aging process, accompanied by physiological changes and dietary patterns, contributes to detrimental deviations in micronutrient consumption. This vulnerable aging population faces heightened risks, including dental caries, due to structural and functional modifications resulting from insufficient nutritional sustenance.

A Case Report of Oral Bisphosphonate Treatment for Osteoporosis Leading to Atypical Femoral Fracture and Pathologic Mandibular Fracture.

BACKGROUND Bisphosphonates inhibit bone resorption in patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis and reduce osteoporotic fracture incidence. Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) and atypical femoral fractures (AFF) are both rare but serious adverse effects of anti-resorptive drugs (ARD) such as bisphosphonates. The most advanced form of MRONJ is termed stage 3 and can lead to severe local sequelae like pathologic mandibular fractures (PMF).

Changes in present-day society such as diets with more sugar, salt, and saturated fat, bad habits and unhealthy lifestyles contribute to the likelihood of the involvement of the microbiota in inflammatory diseases, which contribute to global epidemics of obesity, depression, and mental health concerns. The microbiota is presently one of the hottest areas of scientific and medical research, and exerts a marked influence on the host during homeostasis and disease. Fermented foods and beverages are generally defined as products made by microbial organisms and enzymatic conversions of major and minor food components.

This review examines different nutritional guidelines, some case studies, and provides insights and discrepancies, in the regulatory framework of Food Safety Management of some of the world's economies. There are thousands of fermented foods and beverages, although the intention was not to review them but check their traditional and cultural value, and if they are still lacking to be classed as a category on different national food guides. For understanding the inconsistencies in claims of concerning fermented foods among various regulatory systems, each legal system should be considered unique.

A safety assessment of Coriolus versicolor biomass as a food supplement.

Background: Coriolus versicolor (CV) is a common mushroom with antitumor, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, and immunomodulatory properties. The existence of these properties has been extensively proven mainly using CV extract; research on the biomass form is scarce.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the safety of the CV biomass form, as it is commonly used as a food supplement.

Community oriented interprofessional health education in Mozambique: one student/one family program.

Background: In the remote northern region of Mozambique the ratio of doctors to patients is 1:50,000. In 2007, Lúrio University initiated an innovative, "One Student/One Family" program of teaching and learning for health professions students, to complement their traditional core curriculum. All students of each of the school's six health degree programs complete a curriculum in "Family and Community Health" in each year of their training.

Myositis ossificans traumatica of the medial pterygoid muscle: a case report.

In this report, we present a case of myositis ossificans traumatica (MOT) of the medial pterygoid muscle that had developed after mandibular block anesthesia administered for endodontic treatment of the lower right second molar, demonstrating typical features of this condition. MOT should be considered as a differential diagnosis when there is severe limitation of jaw opening and an associated trauma. Panoramic radiographs and axial and coronal computed tomography (CT) scans can effectively delineate the calcified mass.

European veterinary education: a bridge to quality.

The aim of this review is to provide an insight into the current state of, and future changes in, veterinary education within the European Community, as well as the role of the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE) in evaluating and raising standards of education and training. It also describes the role of EAEVE in developing strategies for changes in the future. Veterinary schools have traditionally aimed at producing the omnicompetent veterinarian at graduation.

An attempt to estimate students' workload.

Following the recent introduction of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) into several European university programs, a new interest has developed in determining students' workload. ECTS credits are numerical values describing the student workload required to complete course units; ECTS has the potential to facilitate comparison and create transparency between institutional curricula. ECTS credits are frequently listed alongside institutional credits in course outlines and module summaries.
