Background/aim: Macrophage-mediated cancer immune evasion is modulated by the balance between "the cluster of differentiation 47 (CD47), an anti-phagocytic signal" and "calreticulin (CALR), a pro-phagocytic signal". CD47 is highly expressed in various types of cancer. However, the expression profiles of CD47 and CALR in breast cancer, especially in different hormone receptor subtypes, and the effects of CD47 blockade in macrophage-mediated therapy are not well understood.

Summary: Graves' disease is an autoimmune condition leading to the activation of and an increase in thyroid hormone secretion. Manifestations of hyperthyroidism in Graves' disease can vary among people. In this case, we report a 24-year-old Thai man with a rare presentation of unilateral gynecomastia along with symptoms of thyrotoxicosis.

Leptospirosis is a common life-threatening disease worldwide. However, its diagnosis is frequently ineffective because the gold standard bacterial culture and microscopic agglutination test (MAT) are usually positive 1-2 weeks after the disease onset. We thus developed an immunochromatographic assay (LEPkit) to detect serum anti-leptospiral lipopolysaccharide (LPS) IgM for rapid diagnosis of acute leptospirosis.

Background: Tumor hypoxia, a common pathophysiological feature of solid tumors, contributes to drug resistance and treatment failure. Here, we demonstrate that hypoxia in HepG2 cells induces resistance towards cytotoxicity of curcumin, a promising anticancer agent.

Materials And Methods: The number of surviving cells after exposure to chemotherapeutic drugs under normoxia (ambient O(2)) and hypoxia (1% O(2)) was determined by crystal violet staining.
