[Multidisciplinary therapy of colorectal cancer].

A multidisciplinary program for the treatment of colorectal cancer is described. The main objective of the authors has been to define uniform up to date guidelines based on recent progress in the treatment of colorectal cancer. Preoperative diagnostic procedures are summarized which advance determination of clinical stage and prognosis.

Adenocarcinoma of the colon developing on the basis of Crohn's disease in childhood.

Colorectal carcinoma rarely affects children and has a dismal prognosis with 5-year survival rates as low as 2.5%-7% despite apparently radical surgery. Here we report the case of an adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon in a 15-year-old girl preceded by uncertain abdominal complaints of 5 years' duration.

Intravital microscopic assessment of pressure induced microcirculatory changes after enterocystoplasty in rats.

Purpose: Chronic over distention may lead to enterocystoplasty rupture. It is hypothesized that pressure induced microvascular derangement and subsequent ischemia of the enterocystoplasty intestinal patch may have a role in this process. We describe distention induced microcirculatory alterations in a chronic rat model of enterocystoplasty using intravital video microscopy.

Oxidative stress in distant organs and the effects of allopurinol during experimental acute pancreatitis.

Background: The present study was aimed at an assessment of the role of oxygen-derived free radicals in the development of local and systemic manifestations of L-arginine (Arg)-induced acute pancreatitis and at an evaluation of the protective effect of the xanthine oxidase inhibitor allopurinol.

Methods: Acute pancreatitis was induced in male Wistar rats by injecting 2 x 250 mg/100 g body weight of Arg intraperitoneally at an interval of 1 h, as a 20% solution in 0.15 M NaCl.

[Ultrastructural study of bronchial mucosa in suspicion of ciliary dyskinesia].

In the ciliary dyskinesia (immotile cilia syndrome) shows the partial or total lacking of cilia's elements. The ciliary dyskinesia may be developed congenital or acquired. The authors report on the experience with 72 biopsies from bronchial mucosa of 68 children, submitted with the question of immotile cilia syndrome.

Recovery of exocrine pancreas six months following pancreatitis induction with L-arginine in streptozotocin-diabetic rats.

The aim of the present work was to investigate the laboratory and morphologic alterations in the pancreas 6 months after pancreatitis induction with L-arginine (Arg) in normal and streptozotocin (STZ)-diabetic rats. The amylase content of the pancreas was significantly decreased in the Arg-treated groups vs. the control group.

The pathogenesis of L-arginine-induced acute necrotizing pancreatitis: inflammatory mediators and endogenous cholecystokinin.

[Total mesorectal excision with ultrasonic coagulation knife ("UltraCision") in surgery of rectal cancer].

The authors report a total of 62 middle and low third rectal cancer cases operated on by total mesorectal excision by the method of Heald. The oncological basis of this procedure is the horizontal regional metastatization of rectal cancer. The total mesorectal excision facilitates, the low anterior resections and preservation of sphincter with an ultra-low colorectal, or coloanal anastomosis using the double stapling technique.

[Helocobacter heilmannii (Gastrospirillum hominis)-associated gastritis: first reported cases in Hungary].

We found a tightly coiled bacterium, Helicobacter heilmannii that is distinct from Helicobacter pylori in the gastric mucosal biopsy of a 55-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman, both of whom had previous history of intermittent epigastric pain. The organisms were distributed in the antral mucosa, which was endoscopically interpreted as demonstrating chronic gastritis in one case, and being normal in the other. Histologically, the affected mucosa presented a mild chronic gastritis without activity and a moderate chronic gastritis with marker activity, respectively.

Leiomyosarcoma of the larynx. Review of the literature and report of two cases.

Leiomyosarcoma of the larynx is an extremely rare malignancy. Until now, only 35 cases have been reported, and only 19 were reported in English. We present 2 new cases observed in the last 3 years at our department.

[The pattern of p53 oncoprotein expression in gastric cancer patients].

The p53 gene mutation or p53 oncoprotein overexpression are the most common genetic alterations in human tumors. Its expression is known to be present in a number of tumors however, its prognostic value in gastric cancer is uncertain. The authors studied the pattern of p53 oncoprotein expression in 45 advanced gastric cancer cases.

[Value of CT-guided biopsy compared to fluoroscopy-guided transthoracic biopsy and bronchoscopic sampling in the diagnosis of pulmonary nodules].

CT-guided histological sampling is nowadays used routinely in the differential diagnosis of focal lung diseases with no characteristic morphology. The aim of this study was to determine the value of the method. CT-guided core biopsy was performed in 25 patients with pulmonary nodules.

[Muir-Torre syndrome].

Muir-Torre syndrome patients have multiple visceral malignancies along with cutaneous sebaceous tumors and keratoacanthomas. We describe a history of a 64-year-old male patient with 13 tumours, who survived 13 years. The initial ascending colon adenocarcinoma was followed by some different tumors of the skin: adenoma and carcinoma of sebaceous glands, epidermoid and basaloid carcinoma and other benign tumors.

[Giant cell interstitial pneumonia].

GIP is a rarely occurring disorder. There is only few literature from its first description. Authors observed the course of GIP in the case of a 54 year old female patient in the form of bilateral disseminated microfocal pulmonary shadows, increased reticular outline with associated respiratory insufficiency.

[Perianal ulceration as the leading symptom of childhood Langerhans-cell histiocytosis].

The authors present a case history for a two-year-old boy in whom the study of perianal ulcer helped to diagnose the Langerhans cell histiocytosis. The authors emphasize the diagnostic value of intertriginous ulcers in identifying the above-mentioned disease.

[Langerhans cell granulomatosis of the lung (morphological studies of lung biopsy specimens from patient with histiocytosis X].

Morphologic studies, including conventional histology, electronmicroscopy and immunohistochemistry were performed on biopsies from 5 patients with pulmonary Langerhans's cell granulomatosis (LCG). In all cases we were able to identify the CD la antigen on paraffin section supporting the diagnosis of LCG.

Chronic recurrent transverse myelitis or multiple sclerosis.

The simultaneous occurrence of multiple sclerosis and transverse myelitis is known in the literature. Apart from the spinal symptoms, other neurological signs of brain involvement are usually found and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reveals disseminated foci in the brain. The positive evoked responses, the immunological abnormalities of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and the oligoclonality together prove the presence of multiple sclerosis.

[Splenic metastases].

Splenic metastases were found in 58 cases (3.1%) at autopsy out of 1842 widely disseminated solid tumors: melanomas, carcinomas of the lung those of the breast, uterus and liver being the most common primary tumors. This rare hematogenous metastatic spread could develop due to portal congestion.

Multiple primary intracranial tumors and association of intra- and extracranial tumors. An autopsy study.

In 37504 autopsies performed during the last 3 decades at the Department of Pathology of Albert Szent-Györgyi Medical University (Szeged, Hungary) gliomas were found in 498 cases. These gliomas were associated with other types of intra- or extracranial tumors in 1.2-3.

In autopsy material of the Department of Pathology at the Albert Szent-Györgyi Medical University in 16.8% of kidney cancers, in 12.5% of urinary bladder cancers and in 21.

[Multiple primary malignant tumors involving the liver].

In the Department of Pathology of the Albert Szent-Györgyi Medical University in Szeged during the last 30 years 1770 (19.4% of the cancers) primary malignant lung tumours were observed in autopsy material, from which 86 patients (4.9%) had other malignancies as well.
