Changing the Culture: Increasing and Sustaining Anesthesiology Resident Physician Publication Rates.

Background: Academic inquiry is foundational to the advancement of medicine and resident training and must be demonstrated to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Past attempts at increasing publication rates have failed to identify educational best practice models. Our aim was to increase resident publication rates via culture and value changes that are universally implementable, affordable, effective, and sustainable.

The first Australian uterus transplantation procedure: A result of a long-term Australian-Swedish research collaboration.

Aims: The aim is to report the results of Australia's first uterus transplantation (UTx).

Methods: Following long-standing collaboration between the Swedish and Australian teams, Human Research Ethics approval was obtained to perform six UTx procedures in a collaborative multi-site research study (Western Sydney Local District Health 2019/ETH13038), including Royal Hospital for Women, Prince of Wales Hospital, and Westmead Hospital in New Souh Wales. Surgeries were approved in both the live donor (LD) and deceased donor models in collaboration with the inaugural Swedish UTx team.

Full flexion of the hips and knees in the supine position to treat an episode of acute hypotension and pulseless electrical activity in a patient with severe aortic stenosis.

This is a case report of a 77-year-old man with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis who underwent removal of an impacted ureteral stone under general anesthesia. During emergence from general anesthesia, his legs were lowered from lithotomy position, resulting in sudden hypotension with progression to pulseless electrical activity. The legs were raised and placed into full flexion of the hips and knees.

The COVID-19 pandemic: local to global implications as perceived by urban ecologists.

The global COVID-19 pandemic is affecting everyone, but in many different ways, stimulating contrasting reactions and responses: opportunities for some, difficulties for many. A simple survey of how individual workers in urban ecology have been coping with COVID-19 constraints found divergent responses to COVID-19 on people's activities, both within countries and between continents. Many academics felt frustrated at being unable to do fieldwork, but several saw opportunities to change ways of working and review their engagement with the natural world.

The Development of an Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist Fellowship Program.

New graduate clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) face many challenges when starting their new role. To address this, a CNS fellowship program was developed to mentor new CNSs during their first year of practice. This CNS fellowship program would provide opportunities to increase skills related to each of the CNS spheres of influence, including nursing practice, patient care, and systems and organization.

The Evolution of Echocardiographic Type and Anesthetic Technique for Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement at a High-Volume Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement Center.

Objective: Describe the change in intraoperative transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) care by examining the utilization of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) versus transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and general anesthesia (GA) versus conscious sedation (CS) over time.

Design: Retrospective, observational.

Setting: A university, single, high-volume TAVR center.

Age, calorie restriction, and age of calorie restriction onset reduce maturation of natural killer cells in C57Bl/6 mice.

Calorie restriction (CR), also known as energy restriction, has been shown to have a deleterious impact on both adult and aged mouse survival during influenza virus infection. Natural killer (NK) cell phenotypic differences contribute to increased susceptibility of adult CR mice. We hypothesized NK cell phenotype from adult and aged C57Bl/6 mice fed NIH-31 diet ad libitum (AL) would be different from NK cell phenotype from adult and aged mice fed NIH-31/NIA fortified diet at 40% CR.

The second-generation eCLIPs Endovascular Clip System: initial experience.

OBJECTIVE Treatment of wide-necked intracranial aneurysms is associated with higher recanalization and complication rates; however, the most commonly used methods are not specifically designed to work in bifurcation lesions. To address these issues, the authors describe the evolution in the design and use of the eCLIPs (Endovascular Clip System) device, a novel hybrid stent-like assist device with flow diverter properties that was first described in 2008. METHODS A registry was established covering 13 international centers at which patients were treated with the second-generation eCLIPs device.

Outcomes of Clinical Nurse Specialist Role Transformation to Population-Focused Model.

Purpose/objectives: In 2010, our comprehensive cancer center developed a professional practice model where the clinical nurse specialist role was transformed to proactively plan and facilitate evidence-based best practices in collaboration with a transdisciplinary, population-focused team that manages the patient across the cancer care continuum.

Background: Prior to this transition, practice was unit based, focused on nursing staff education, skills, and competencies, and practice varied widely based on the needs of the unit. This lack of role consistency resulted in decreased autonomy and collaboration and frustration with not consistently impacting positive outcomes.

Increasing tumor thickness is associated with recurrence and poorer survival in patients with Merkel cell carcinoma.

Background: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare, aggressive cutaneous neuroendocrine tumor usually occurring on sun-exposed skin in elderly patients. Clinical and pathologic factors associated with disease progression and mortality in patients with MCC are poorly defined. Recently, it has been reported that p63 expression in primary MCC is strongly associated with clinical outcome.

Nurses' acquisition and retention of knowledge after trauma training.

The Advanced Trauma Nursing Course (ATNC) aims to equip nurses with the appropriate knowledge in order to skilfully care for the trauma patient. In this study, knowledge gained from the course, and its subsequent retention, was used as a measure of the course's effectiveness. Fourteen nurses participated in the study.

Radiofrequency (electrosurgical) ablation of articular cartilage: a study in sheep.

The objective of this study was to examine the effect of a bipolar ablation probe on experimentally roughened articular cartilage and compare it with the traditional mechanical shaving technique using the knee joint of sheep. Twenty-eight skeletally mature ewes were divided randomly into two groups: one group was treated with a rotating shaving device and another group was treated using the bipolar ablation probe (Bipolar Arthroscopic Probe; Electroscope, Inc, Boulder, CO). Animals were killed at 0, 6, 12, and 24 weeks, and histological sections of the experimental limbs were compared with sections of the opposite limb using a modified Mankin scale.

Biochemical and molecular characterization of the insecticidal fragment of CryV.

Providing comfort in the resuscitation room.

Providing comfort in the resuscitation room may not be found high on the list of priorities of nurses working in the Accident and Emergency department. The resuscitation room is an acute care area where patients are very sick and physiological needs are of paramount importance. However, by looking more closely at comfort and what it is, this paper aims to help nurses identify what the components of comfort are and, therefore, recognise their worth and importance when caring for a patient in the resuscitation room.

Identification and characterization of a novel Bacillus thuringiensis delta-endotoxin entomocidal to coleopteran and lepidopteran larvae.

A new class of Bacillus thuringiensis delta-endotoxins, or insecticidal control proteins (ICPs), is defined by an apparently cryptic protein with a unique primary structure and novel entomocidal specificity for certain coleopteran and lepidopteran species. The discovery of a new group of ICPs will extend the use of this natural insecticide in integrated pest-management systems.

Identification and characterization of a serotype b-specific segment of the Haemophilus influenzae genome.

Within the region of the Haemophilus influenzae serotype b genome required for capsule expression, a 4.6-kilobase segment was cloned, used as a hybridization probe, and found to be specific for serotype b strains. Deletion mutagenesis within this segment defined a locus necessary for serotype b capsule production and another involved in maintenance of wild-type colony appearance.

Mutations affecting expression and maintenance of genes encoding the serotype b capsule of Haemophilus influenzae.

Deletion mutagenesis analysis of a duplicated gene necessary for Haemophilus influenzae serotype b capsule expression showed that only one functional copy of this gene is required for capsule production and for virulence in infant rats. Mutant strains generated in this study differed from each other and from the parental strain in their ability to maintain the large tandem duplication which contains the genes involved in serotype b capsule expression.

Clinically apparent rubella reinfection.

We report two cases of rubella reinfection in apparently immunocompetent young women. In both cases rubella-specific IgG had been detected on two occasions prior to an illness clinically diagnosed as rubella. Rubella-specific IgM was detected by various techniques in samples of serum collected at the time of the illness.
